On July 5, Nick Magruder officially took office as the newest Chief of Police at the Athens Police Department, or APD, following the retirement of his predecessor, Tom Pyle.
After years of healing and coming to terms with herself, Devi Vishwakumar makes her way into her senior year of high school once again surrounded by friends, family and drama in the final season of “Never Have I Ever.” However, while the story of healing and self improvement shines, the rest of the plotlines throughout the season either simply don’t feel as important or just didn’t need to be there in the first place.
Recently, I’ve started to notice myself and those around me going through the day’s motions without really stopping to enjoy the 24 hours. Whether it’s because of work or other responsibilities, the day can start to feel less beautiful than it actually is – that’s where romanticizing your life comes into play.
A new U.S. Supreme Court ruling supporting Native American children involved with foster care and adoption could have lasting impacts for preserving the freedom and safety of Indigenous families. Here’s what you need to know about it:
James Gunn has done it again. His newest film, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (2023), is a testament of how willing a director is to complete a film even when put in such awkward circumstances. When Gunn was fired by Marvel back in 2018 due to the resurfacing of old twitter posts posts he had made well over a decade ago that contained both rape and pedophilia jokes, it looked like Gunn was never going to complete his trilogy.
Angels. Love. Self-discovery. Rebirth. These are just some of the recurring motifs within Christine and the Queens’ fourth album, “Paranoïa, Angels, True Love,” a stunning comeback for the French singer after recovering from the loss of his mother. Unlike its predecessors, this album challenges the singer, allowing him to move past 1980s influences into a new realm of experimentation.
On June 4, I stood for a total of five hours in a crowded general admissions pit just to see the unbeatable and high-energy band almost all listened to at least once if you grew up during the early-2000s: Paramore. Performing at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, the two-hour set was full of fan-favorites and new songs from the trio’s latest album, “This Is Why,” which was released back in February.

Amazon Prime’s latest docuseries, “Shiny Happy People,” takes a closer look at what actually happened behind the scenes of the reality show that followed the Duggar family for years. “19 Kids and Counting” (formerly “17 Kids and Counting” and “18 Kids and Counting”) was a popular pick on TLC. I remember watching it on cable when I was younger and being in awe of how such a large family could function so seamlessly. After watching the four-episode docuseries I have come to terms with how easily the media can falsify reality and how toxic the roots of this family truly are.
Netflix’s “Queen Cleopatra,” released in April, has faced heavy criticism. The controversy surrounds the casting of Adele James, a Black actress, as Queen Cleopatra.
It’s uncommon for a show to be universally panned by both critics and fans of all sides of entertainment. The last show this happened to was “Velma,” an animated show on HBO Max, which ruined the childhood Scooby-Doo character. Just months later, “Queen Cleopatra” on Netflix is the top dog of internet controversy. The show is a “documentary” revolving around the life of Cleopatra during her rule in Ancient Egypt.
As of April 27, Ohio was a part of a four-way tie for first place in the Mid-American Conference. From that day, Ohio lost 10 of its last 12 conference games and fell from a potential No. 1 seed to not even earning a spot in the four team playoff.
I am a pretty shy person, so college was a huge leap for me when it came to meeting new people in a new environment. When it was time for dorm selection for my freshman year of college, I was highly anxious. My roommate and I went on the housing portal and discovered there were no options for a two-person room. At that point, I had known my future roommate for 15 years, and having to be in a quad really scared me.
Ohio (19-30, 15-15 Mid-American Conference) needed a miracle over the weekend versus Akron (21-34, 12-18 Mid-American Conference) if it wanted to extend its season and advance to the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Bobcats needed to win all three games and hope that Western Michigan would be swept by Central Michigan.
One of the biggest factors I considered when looking for a college was its commitment to sustainability. As our environment continues to change, it is important to support institutions that recognize the need for anthropogenic change. Colleges and universities are responsible for housing, feeding, and the upkeep of facilities/land; they provide the necessities for students residing on campus. Because students rely on the university for their basic necessities, they can’t maintain as many personal sustainability practices. But luckily, they don’t need to worry because OU continues to implement eco-friendly choices. Here are five of my favorite ways OU tackles sustainable living:
Student Senate passed the previously defeated fire-fee bill, which aims to fund the understaffed Athens Fire Department with a $50 opt-out fee for every student each semester and further advance fire education on campus.
Moving into your freshman dorm is exciting. It’s likely your first time living away from home, away from your parents and completely independent in terms of regulating your life. However, that means you are responsible for almost every facet of your new life, which also means you have to be well-equipped to do so.
Meeting new people at college can be hard. The first few weeks for new students on any college campus tend to consist of a lot of small talk, asking people what their major is and where they are from. Although there are many different people at OU, here are five you need to know.
In 1818, Mary Shelly opened her novel “Frankenstein” with a description of cold and bleak wastelands that elicit a sense of hope and future, despite their frozen nature. Over two centuries later, an indie rock group from Cincinnati, Ohio, drew inspiration from that classic to bring their music back from the brink of the end.
