This time of year is the best and the worst. With finals week approaching, we’re supposed to be locked inside with our noses in a pile of lecture notes. At the same time, the warm April breeze calls our names to hit up the bike path, College Green or South Beach. The struggle is real, right? Turns out, you can have the best of both worlds without feeling too guilty — just head outside for a picnic lunch or dinner. Pack up these quick, cheap eats and tell your friends to “cash you ousside.”

You know how the perfect playlist can take a house party from good to fantastic? I think the same concept applies to exercise. Music has the incredible potential to transform how you approach a workout. I like to think outside of the box and use my workout playlist as a structural tool. Here’s how I make it happen.

When I was interning in New York City this past summer, I followed a rock-solid morning workout schedule. By 7 a.m., I was either running alongside the Hudson River or hitting the small gym on the 13th floor of my apartment building for weight training. I worked out nearly every morning for a short half hour, but those 30 minutes offered endless advantages. Whether it’s 7 or 10 a.m., here are six reasons why you should start your day with exercise.

While the hangover has faded away, a weekend of near-constant drinking can leave someone feeling sluggish for several days afterward. While it’s easy to blame the fatigue on a lack of substantial rest, there are two other culprits likely involved: poor hydration and unhealthy foods. It’s totally fine that you might have splurged on late night food (after all, weekends are for treating yourself), but continuing to eat and drink like garbage all week won’t give you the energy you need. Consider this your post-fest detox kit.

When hunger strikes, the only ammunition seems to be eating more food. Well, not today — plan a counterattack in advance by gearing up with these five secret weapons.

Saint Patrick’s Day has always been a holiday that my family holds near and dear to our hearts (my last name should give you a clue as to why). Growing up, we would sit down together in our kitchen, decorated with green shamrocks, to enjoy our traditional Irish dinner of corned beef, potatoes, carrots and cabbage. In college, that all changed when I found out Green Beer Day replaced the usual festivities of March 17th. If you don’t want to hit the bars or cook up a whole Irish meal, you’re in luck: here are two recipes that will leave you feeling just as festive.

When I found out two weeks ago that I would be going to Tampa for my first college spring break trip, I danced around my apartment with joy. This meant I wouldn’t be spending 10 days in the Cleveland cold for the fourth year in a row. All of the sudden, a horrible thought struck my brain:

It’s time to examine the food labels out there — and no, I don’t mean the nutrition facts labels. Our generation seems to believe everything they read (fake news, celebrity gossip rumors and all that jazz). When it comes to what we put in our mouths, the same applies. The food on your plate can’t speak out against the stereotypes associated with it, so that’s what I’m here for.

Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that you either love or hate. Even if you hate it, you can’t deny it’s kind of the dessert version of Thanksgiving with all the chocolate and sweets you can eat — and no one can judge you for it. Pop in a rom-com with friends or snuggle up with your significant other, then whip up one of these easy, guilt-free treats.

Being homesick is one thing, but being actually sick at college is so much worse. I’ll admit it: I’m almost 22 years old, and I still wish my mom could have been here last week to take care of me when I came down with a bad cough and stuffy nose.

I hope I’m not offending any vegetarians, but this week, it’s all about the poultry and protein.

Last Friday, I went to my very first Boxercise group fitness class at Ping with my best friend. After a long first week of classes, I was looking forward to pumping out some endorphins and torching lots of calories. Still, I had no idea what the next hour had in store. I’ve never been into boxing as a sport, but I had a good feeling about this.

To set the record straight, dictionary.com lists seven different definitions for the word “resolution.” In terms of New Years resolutions, the most relevant one is, “a resolve; a decision or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something.”

Having experienced finals week six times in my college career, I have learned more about exam prep than I thought was ever possible. It seems simple, right? Take good notes in class, study those notes frequently, do your homework on time and don’t cram the night before.

While we were fortunate to have had warm temperatures stay with us until November, all good things must come to an end. For many, the onslaught of winter means going outside as least often as possible; hibernating under at least two blankets with warm, fuzzy socks to boot becomes second nature.

Eating and watching movies have been the bread and butter of entertainment for decades. This is probably because it combines two things people love a lot: stuffing their face and relaxing. While buttery popcorn and candy are musts, why not add a few DIY items into your snack repertoire? Have your friends join the fun to speed up prep time.

Unfortunately, we’ve reached that time of year when it’s nearly inevitable to hear multiple people in class cough or sniffle for an hour straight.

There’s a better way to become energized that doesn’t involve reaching for another cup of coffee. It’s called Zumba.

Sometimes, busy college students just don’t have time to sit down for a meal or wait in line for food. Or they’re like me, who somehow always manages to dribble mayonnaise on my shirt while trying to eat a sandwich and walk at the same time. Thankfully, there is a quicker way to get the nutrients and fuel you need — make a smoothie.

Ah, breakfast, the most important meal of the day. It’s easy to get in a rut with something as conventionally “blah” as oatmeal, but all that steaming bowl needs is a little creativity and imagination to switch things up. Look no further than your pantry (or snack inventory) for some breakfast inspiration.
