Earth Day is coming up fast, and one of the most wasteful sectors of life worth addressing is the cosmetics industry, a vast web of brands, manufacturers, retailers, products and waste items that many of us fashion fanatics financially support.

In high school, my hair was much like it is today — dense, frizzy and impossibly coily — except about ten times longer. For most of my childhood, my mother was my primary hairstylist. Though not a professional, she would expertly flat iron, braid or otherwise tame my hair. It wasn’t until I got older, a senior preparing for college, that I really had to face my hair. I was afraid to comb or touch it as it was so long and curly that knots formed easily. Whenever I did get the nerve to mess with my hair, I would usually quit of exhaustion before it was suitably styled.

The first ever issue of Vogue Arabia features a flawless image of Gigi Hadid draped in a dazzling bejeweled head veil comes at a time when worldwide opinions about Islam are more sensitive than they’ve been in years.

Fashion Week in Milan was almost as political as the Oscars. Italian designer Angela Missoni took to the runway with an army of models to make a fuzzy pink statement. After debuting a new line of cozy Missoni sweaters, the models paraded down the runway donning identical pink-knit hats reminiscent of those worn by protesters at the Women’s March last month. Missoni herself joined her models — and her mom — in wearing the custom pink hats, and invited audience members to grab the matching hats, which had been placed on their seats, and join her in “(showing) the world the fashion community is united and fearless,” according to Vanessa Friedman of the New York Times.

Fur has been a symbol of luxe and status, as well as a major fashion statement, for decades. From P. Diddy and Coco Chanel to Macklemore and Rihanna, celebrities and icons have scarcely ever been afraid to drape themselves in a little animal hair. In 2017, environmental concerns and activism are more prevalent than ever. But the pelt trend has had a rocky moral history and its origins trace back further than most. It may not only be difficult for fashion to let go of fur; I’d argue it would be out of character.

This season’s round of fashion weeks is looking to be a great one with lots of innovative styles, classic and revamped trends as well as bold new color combinations making their way down international runways. In the spirit of 2017, however, traditions are being challenged, boundaries are being pushed and new innovations are bringing the fashion industry into the 21st century.

My roommate’s closet is like a bottomless vat of spunk and sexiness. Every time I see her, I find myself wondering where she finds these clothes — vintage jumpsuits, sleek velvet dresses, colorful shawls — and how I could attain such a diverse and interesting wardrobe for myself. And, almost every time I ask her, “Where did you get that?” Vivian Thomas is sure to reply, “From the thrift store.”

Fashion is a racket. As of 2014, the market value of the global apparel industry was valued at $3 trillion, with about $385 billion attributed to the U.S. alone. The industry employs millions of people worldwide in a multitude of positions, from manufacturing to retail.

I’ve seen a lot of things this past week on social media: some things fill me with hope while others have me wanting to leave the country.

In a last minute attempt to actually wear a costume, I spent my HallOUween dressed as the first lady of the United States. Michelle Obama is one of the most well-liked people in politics, and arguably one of the most well-dressed. While searching Google Images for costume ideas, I was reminded of how versatile and unconventional Obama’s style is. When it comes to fashion, our first lady has been the most iconic since Jackie Kennedy.

Fashion consists of everything you put on or pick up to establish your own image. For some people, fashion includes a lot of jewelry. For others, fashion includes hats and hair accessories and extensions. For myself, fashion definitely includes makeup.

Last weekend was Homecoming, and the sidewalks were streaked with green and white as students and alumni proudly rocked Ohio University’s colors. Sporting some OU gear of my own — a white T-shirt with “Ohio University” spelled in bright, colorful letters — I couldn’t help but reflect on the significance of such promotional clothing.

There is nothing more satisfying after spending at least an hour washing, moisturizing and detangling my hair, than pulling a scarf over my head and tying a stylish knot. I’ve noticed an increase in turbans and headwraps among the fashion choices of my black female peers here on campus. There is a prevalent natural hair community of black women here at Ohio, and it is not uncommon to see a colorful scarf atop a young woman’s head. The trend, however, is one that represents a complex cultural history, and each time I tie a scarf around my head, I carry a tradition heavy with significance.

My boyfriend is 6’1”, 225 pounds and wears a size 36 jeans. I am 5’6”, 165 pounds and wear a size 12. The other day, I borrowed my boyfriend’s pants to wear to work and they fit about as well as most of my own.

If you’ve worked in food services, especially in the fast-food industry, odds are that you have worn denim jeans to work, either by choice or by obligation. I’ve worked quite a few fast-food jobs in my short life, and I’ve even worked in the dining halls on campus, and almost every job I’ve had so far has required employees wear jeans to work.

The first day of classes my freshman year was one of the most exciting days of my life. I was starting new classes at a new school in a new place, surrounded by strangers and opportunity and crippled by fear. I made an effort to remember every detail of my first day of college; the way the classrooms smelled and the feeling of hope that stirred within me.

You’ve been working toward this moment for months. The moment you will step on stage and make history. From backstage, you see your face flashing across a massive screen as your loved ones and coworkers tell the whole world how great you are.
