Over the past couple of weekends, students here at Ohio University have celebrated the beginnings of fest season. As a freshman, this was a very exciting — as well as worrying — experience for me, having no idea what to expect. So I went out anyway.

If you’re like me, you’re a college student who loves animals yet is unable to keep one in the dorm. This is where shops like Petland on East State Street come in handy. While I may not be able afford a dog or even be able to keep one in the dorm, thanks to these shops, I can go and play with them as much as I’d like.

If you have ever watched TV before, you’ve noticed that there's always some sort of really big sale that you shouldn’t miss. Macy’s One Day Sales and furniture stores that always seem to having a going out of business sale, appear to never end.

On January 4, the account @world_record_egg was created on Instagram with the goal of posting an image of a brown chicken egg and having that become the most liked picture on instagram. Within 10 days the post surpassed Kylie Jenner’s most liked post of around 18 million, and is now currently over 52 million likes.

Well, that was boring. This past weekend aired the most disappointing Super Bowl in recent memory for me, from a historically low scoring game to having ratings dipping to their lowest point in the past ten years. There were plenty of opportunities for the NFL to step up and make up for the already underwhelming teams.

Think back to 2012, chances are you had heard of the Minecraft craze that overtook the youth of America. Looking back now, the community that rose up around this extremely simple game is similar to the one that has risen up round Fortnite in the past year or so, full of 12-year-olds and YouTube who think screaming is equal to comedy.

The internet has been described by many to be the Wild West of the 21st century. And now it seems that the lawless unrestrained communities that have built themselves up are about to go the way the gunslingers of the past.

We all know the legend of Santa Claus, how every year he brings presents made by elves kept at his home in the North Pole to all the good little children of the world while traveling on his sleigh pulled by reindeer. Santa has been used by corporate America to sell the idea of Christmas to the populus. Because of that, most people will say it makes him a capitalist image used to trick people into spending more money on the most expensive holiday of the year.

In this year’s midterm elections, the Democrats won a majority in the House while the Republicans continue to hold the Senate. While many people expected there to be a “Blue Wave,” this was the most likely outcome — and what is best for the country.

No matter who you ask, if they grew up in ‘90s or early 2000s they will be more than likely to have a favorite video game from their childhood. Chances are this game will be nowhere near as good as they remember. As someone who has several family members who played video games during this time, I have noticed that they consider the games they grew up with the pinnacle of gaming.

Politics and money have been intertwined with each other since there was ever a need for someone to rule and people had items of value to give them. But now, people want that to change. “Draining the swamp” of the capital touted by President Trump — along with the popularity of Sen. Bernie Sanders — there seems to more of an more of an outcry for getting money out of politics and getting rid of “career” politicians. This is also exemplified by the disdain most people have for the one percent who people feel run this country.

While it may not seem it now, the current political divide will affect us for years to come. And though this divisive state seems to have come overnight, it has been boiling for decades before 2016 and the toxicity of all the hate feels rampant, it’s more present than we think.

Local politics are the purest form of democracy, yet it feels as though no one pays any attention and is only concerned with the national level. How many people can you name that serve on your city council or local school board? I am willing to bet outside of election season it’s a very small number. That needs to change.

Anime, loved by some and loathed by others, has a robust history and its influence is seen in many cartoons today. While many cartoons in America have a lighthearted angle, some anime shows are able to address some of the more pressing issues in society – depression, to name one.

This weekend I had the great pleasure to attend a concert at The Union. It was here that I was able to listen to three punk bands: King Buu, Radattack and The Wastemen. All three of these bands were able to keep the audience engaged with a mix of great stage presence and musicians. This show reminded me of people saying punk dies and sold its soul, yet somehow bands like these are able to draw a crowd and keep it, despite some issues.

BlacKkKlansman follows Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), the first black cop to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department in 1975. During the film we get to watch as Ron rises up from working in the records room, having to deal with the racist remarks from his colleagues, to heading an investigation into the Ku Klux Klan or ‘The Organization’ as the members like to refer to it as.
