For the second episode in a row, Lovecraft Country begins with a non-black character on screen. While last episode it was Hillary (Jamie Neumann), this episode it’s Ji-ah (Jamie Chung), Tic’s (Jonathan Majors) suspected romantic fling from Korea. The episode provides a deep flashback of their relationship during the war, adding context to Tic’s deciphering of “D-I-E” in the last episode and ultimately, establishing the remainder of the season.

On Friday, the world lost Chadwick Boseman, one of the most important actors of his generation. Immediately, eulogies poured out from across the internet from vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris to Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and countless other celebrities and fans alike. Lovecraft Country’s third episode, “Holy Ghost” is focused on Leti (Jurnee Smollet) buying a haunted house and the psychological aftermath of George’s (Courtney B. Vance) death on his family. Like previous installments, this episode courageously comments on American history and features strong performances from its leads and continues a strong debut season.

While this episode was more unevenly paced than its predecessor, it was still intriguing and thoroughly enjoyable.

In the narrative of black America, the law is often the antagonist. That antagonist, like a spiteful chameleon, comes in many colors. At times, it wears the blue of an enforcer of the law. Other times, it wears the black robes of a biased judge. Most of the time, it wears white like the papers that “black codes,” “mandatory minimums,” and discriminatory housing contracts were drafted on.

Paying taxes is like doing the dishes — it sucks. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, a professor or student or, even, a boomer or a zoomer; it’s a truth that we all hold to be self-evident. Trust me, I’m fully acquainted with the evils of both. I'm a dishwasher at a dining hall, and after hours of washing plates, a portion of that money earned is taken by taxes.
