During the 2020 lockdown, streaming skyrocketed, and people tried escaping reality through TV. Amid the sea of feel-good romance films, action movies and other programs, Bo Burnham’s Inside and South Park’s “Pandemic Special” stand out. Both are comedies, yet each one tears down television’s facade and confronts viewers with the depressing reality of the pandemic and the fact that escaping through television offers little relief.

As of the fall 2020 academic year, Ohio University’s Shively Dining Court has been closed to help cut costs. One less dining court on campus may save money, but with COVID-19 cases rising in Ohio, and Athens specifically, the increased traffic in the two remaining campus dining courts provides an unsafe dining experience.

Few creatures are as iconic as the Lovecraftian monster Cthulhu. The Great Old One has appeared in numerous films and video games. Despite this great acclaim and having Lovecraft’s fictional universe be known as the “Cthulhu Mythos,” Cthulhu is far from the most interesting or powerful creature in Lovecraft’s fiction.

When the world wide web became available for public use in 1991, few could imagine how vast its influence would be just 30 years later. As prominent as the web is though, its newness and constant evolution have left many folks behind. Nearly 22 million (42%) of American seniors lack wireline broadband access at home, and scheduling appointments online to get COVID-19 vaccinations for the elderly has been dubbed a crisis.

Copyright was created to help creators by protecting their original creative works and prevent others from unfairly profiting off them. The protection would last for a set number of years before the work would expire and enter the public domain. There, it would become part of the public's cultural heritage and be free to use and rework for anyone that wanted to, thus keeping the work alive through reinvention. However, what was once a good law meant to help creators has been warped into a weapon to stifle them.

The year 2019 saw an explosion of warnings and health concerns over e-cigarettes that sprung up seemingly overnight. “Olive, the Other Reindeer” is a 1999 Christmas special that centers on Olive, a dog who believes she is a reindeer who can pull Santa’s sleigh and save Christmas. The special's main antagonist is the Postman, a disgruntled postal worker who wishes to ruin Christmas and the staggering mail load that comes with it. While his hatred also stems from being put on the naughty list, the Postman’s complaints about holiday shopping are legitimate even twenty years later. His musical number “Christmas (Bah, Bug and Hum!)” is only grounded in fact.

The toilet paper shortages of early quarantine may be behind us, but companies have been shorting buyers for years. Toilet paper used to average 4.5 inches a square, but some have shrunk to be only 4.1 x 3.7-inch squares — a 25% decrease. You would not guess this at first glance, for many companies have enlarged the cardboard tubes to compensate for the decrease and trick buyers.

The year 2020 claims yet another tradition, as for the first time in 54 years, the iconic Peanut’s special “It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” will be pulled from regular television and will air exclusively on the Apple TV+ streaming service—along with the other Peanuts holiday specials. Though Apple is allowing those without a subscription to view the “Great Pumpkin” free for a brief time, this is no substitute for airing on basic cable.

While "Frankenstein" has been adapted numerous times, quality does not always follow quantity, and the first book of Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein series is a prime example of how not to do an adaptation.
