Following a blend of comedy and drama in Steven Universe Future’s four-episode premiere, Saturday’s two new episodes, “Bluebird” and “A Very Special Episode,” lean more into the former, reintroducing two secondary villains and the series’ first new song.

If the last two episodes of The Mandalorian have seemed a bit tonally different from their preceding episodes, that’s likely because they’re the only two episodes not written by series creator Jon Favreau. And just as the last episode, “The Gunslinger,” took heavy inspiration from westerns, Friday’s episode, “The Prisoner,” dives headfirst into the heist genre.

The Mandalorian’s premiere set the stage for its main narrative, while its second chapter took a slower approach to create a greater attachment among its characters. With all of the necessary storytelling and emotional dominoes in place, creator and writer Jon Favreau uses the series’ third chapter to begin knocking them down in a satisfying blend of explosive action and intense drama.

Rick and Morty is primarily known for being an absurd and grotesque adult cartoon, playing off tropes of sci-fi classics, such as Back to the Future and Star Trek, to cast an irreverent take on the genre. What is less known, however, is that the show often runs deeper, examining characters’ admittedly absurd struggles through a genuinely thoughtful lens. Sunday night’s episode has two branching narratives, and while one follows the traditional formula of a Rick and Morty story, the other serves as a more introspective look into its main character’s pain and motivations.

Following The Mandalorian’s action-packed and lore-heavy premiere, its second episode, “The Child,” takes a slower, more quiet pace to explore its title character and supporting cast without the burden of setting up its premise. The result is a deeper look into its characters’ flaws and quirks while delivering a wholesome serving of laughs and squeals at its clumsy and cute creatures.

The Mandalorian represents many “firsts,” both for Star Wars and Disney at large. It kicks off this year’s Star Wars season, preceding both a major video game and theatrical release. It marks the first piece of original content for Disney+, the company’s ambitious streaming platform. And perhaps most significantly, it signals the first full-scale, live-action Star Wars TV series with the same polish and heart of its films.

Before Sunday night’s premiere of Rick and Morty’s fourth season, Adult Swim displayed a short message acknowledging the long, 770-day wait since the adult cartoon’s last episode in 2017, but promised the following half hour would be worth the wait. If fans were looking for a dramatic change to Ricky and Morty’s structure or a deeper emphasis on narrative structure, they might feel let down. If, however, they simply want more of what has made the show so celebrated, last night’s episode won’t disappoint.

Astral Chain is PlatinumGames’ most recent project, an action game in which the police force has control of powerful Legions, granting them various strengths and abilities, in a fight against the extraterrestrial Chimeras. It is over the top, often nonsensical and absolutely Platinum at its best.

Since Tom Holland first wore the Spidey Suit in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, the superhero seems to have entered a new golden age. With four movies starring Holland’s Spider-Man, the popular PS4 game and the groundbreaking animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, every swing Spidey takes seems to take him higher and higher.

Movies based on video games have a bad track record, to say the least. From the disastrous Super Mario Bros. film in 1993 to the middling to cringe-worthy Resident Evil and Tomb Raider films of the contemporary era, many have concluded that video game narrative structures cannot effectively translate to the silver screen. Pokémon Detective Pikachu blows that notion away with a fun but heartfelt story in a fully realized world.

Since Tony Stark crafted his first Iron Man suit in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has evolved into the most ambitious and successful cinematic universe of all time. Avengers: Endgame is the end of Marvel’s first saga, and the Russo brothers have taken every care to carry this story to the finish line with focus, energy and emotion, fitting for the grandest of grand finales.

Opera has a stigma of being lengthy, expensive and hard to understand. Performing Mozart’s The Magic Flute on Tuesday, the Ohio Opera Theater and the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra aim to challenge those notions by performing a fun and accessible opera that anyone can enjoy.

Final Fantasy XV, which launched in 2016, is gorgeous and in many ways fantastic, but feels inexplicably rushed during certain segments and has a baffling overarching plot. To address these issues, Square Enix has supported the game through a feature-length film, short anime series and DLC episodes. Following the departure of the game’s director, Hajime Tabata, “Episode Ardyn” is the unexpected final piece of post-game content surrounding Final Fantasy XV.
