Right now, no social media is more popular than TikTok. In March there were 150 million American users on the app, and over 60% of these users are Gen Z, or people born between 1996 and 2012. The app tailors toward users' interests, showing users videos they are likely to enjoy. Many of the videos on the app follow trends from viral videos and popular influencers, but TikTok trends follow a rapid cycling in and out of what is trending. Many of these trends are all in good fun, but some promote excessive buying of trendy products and result in overconsumption.
The damage climate change presents to human health has become an increasingly important issue.
One of the biggest factors I considered when looking for a college was its commitment to sustainability. As our environment continues to change, it is important to support institutions that recognize the need for anthropogenic change. Colleges and universities are responsible for housing, feeding, and the upkeep of facilities/land; they provide the necessities for students residing on campus. Because students rely on the university for their basic necessities, they can’t maintain as many personal sustainability practices. But luckily, they don’t need to worry because OU continues to implement eco-friendly choices. Here are five of my favorite ways OU tackles sustainable living:
On April 12, Fort Lauderdale experienced a severe flash flood that drenched the city in over 20 inches of rain in just 12 hours, causing the airport to shut down and citizens to evacuate their homes due to obvious safety concerns.
Recently, it seems Ohio can’t catch a break from environmental disasters. The EPA continues to monitor the air, water and soil quality in East Palestine, OH, and oversee the cleanup of the train derailment. Yet, in a tragically ironic accident, a truck carrying approximately 40,000 pounds of contaminated soil from the derailment site crashed and overturned on state Route 165. Luckily, no other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver suffered only minor injuries.
I am constantly seeking new ways to live the greenest lifestyle I can, but it’s not always easy, especially as a college student. I’m often limited by money and space to practice easy at-home sustainable practices. However, this doesn’t mean I can’t do anything, in fact there are many easy practices anyone can implement– college student or not. Perhaps the easiest practice to incorporate into everyday life is to eat less meat. There are many benefits to eating less meat, for yourself and the planet. Here are some reasons why
Environmentalists are extremely disappointed in the Biden administration after its decision last week to approve the Willow Project. Willow is a drilling project set to take place in Northern Alaska and tap into promising amounts of oil, an estimated 180,000 barrels of oil a day at its peak to be exact. This project operates under Conocophillips, an American petroleum refineries company. The Biden Administration approved this despite Biden’s campaign promises to end new oil and gas leasing on federal land. Though this is not the first drilling site to break this promise under the Biden Administration, it is certainly the biggest and most environmentally detrimental.
On Feb. 3, a Norfolk Southern train derailed causing a nearly three dozen train car pileup in East Palestine, Ohio. 11 of the cars involved in the pileup contained hazardous materials, one of the materials being vinyl chloride. When inhaled in small doses, vinyl chloride may cause irritation to respiratory systems, shortness of breath, dizziness and headaches, all of which have been reported by East Palestinian residents. However, chronic exposure can cause cancer in the liver, brain and lungs as well as leukemia and lymphoma cancers. As a result of the crash, East Palestine may now be facing chronic exposure. Let's look at why.
Shell is in the spotlight after announcing its profits for 2022 last Thursday, which were more than double its earnings in 2021– almost $40 billion to be exact. The company is Europe’s largest oil company by revenue and considering 2022’s record high gas prices, these high profits come as no shock. This announcement was followed by another: Shell is setting up a new platform in the North Sea.
