Letter: Restart values don't stop with election victory

On the evening of April 17, I stood in the Bobcat Student Lounge, side by side with my friends. A crowd gathered on the first floor of Baker Center. We fixated on the announcer behind the microphone, our hope as quiet and as loud as we could collectively bear.

Letter: Volunteers needed for work with children

“Somebody should do something about that.” A sentiment we have all heard or possibly even said ourselves. It’s our way of safely advocating for something that we probably believe in but don’t believe we have the power to change. Child abuse and neglect is happening right here in our own community. Children are exposed to substance abuse, domestic violence or they are abused themselves. This is a real problem. “Somebody should do something about that.”

Editorial: Now is the time to disrupt status quo

We kick off the first day of our last week of newspapers for the semester with a front-page story about another potential tuition increase. The Budget Planning Council recommended to Ohio University President Roderick McDavis that the tuition rate get bumped up 1.5 percent to about $10,535 per year for an Athens campus undergrad. McDavis will probably agree with the BPC, as he usually does, and take the motion to the Board of Trustees for a vote. Normally, the meeting when the trustees vote on tuition takes place before the end of the semester, but this time the board decided to push that meeting back to June and moved it to St. Clairsville. By then, most students will be out of the loop and, most likely, unable to attend.
