The Wake Forest Invitational was no threat to the Green and White this weekend as the Bobcats recorded several performances to begin their outdoor season.
On Feb. 1, eight local citizens were arrested during a protest at the K&H Partners injection well site on U.S. 50 near Coolville. The Athens Friends Meeting (Quaker) would like to acknowledge both the disciplined behavior of the 150 demonstrators and the respect and professional manner of local law officers in making the arrests (according to a Feb. 3 article in The Post).
Graduate Student Senate President Joel Newby announced last week that local law enforcement officials are considering asking Athens City Council to enact a “social host” ordinance. Basically, that would permit law enforcement to arrest a person of legal drinking age who “negligently” allows an underage person to have or consume alcohol at his or her home.
Isolated as I am down here in the alternative universe known as Florida, the news from Athens arrives only sporadically. Thus, I just recently read of Coach Jim Christian’s lament about the general perception of the Bobcats’ men’s basketball team’s post-season berth in the CIT (Collegeinsider.com Tournament). Yes, dear reader, I sense your question even from this distance: “What in the world is the CIT?” From the article in question I have learned what it is not: it is not the NCAA, not the NIT and not the CBI. Coach Christian, much to his credit, defends his players from “the snark, cynicism and sarcasm during this time of the year — by media, pundits and fans.” (That is, just about everybody except the Athletic Kingdom.)
Whether it’s with vegetable gardens, donation stations or cooking classes, Community Food Initiative officials say the local organization is striving to fill hungry bellies and foodie desires in Athens.
A grant from the National Science Foundation will fund a "new industry cooperative research center" on Mill St., according to a university news release.
The women's golf team finished its first day of competition tied for ninth place in the Ocala Invitational in Ocala, Fla. The Bobcats are competing against 16 teams from across the country including Mid-American Conference rivals Toledo, Akron and Northern Illinois.
In true Game of Thrones form, humor and violence united in the first episode of Season 4 as a crowd of more than 700 fans cheered and groaned together for the pre-screening at Ohio University.

There is nothing more infinite than an empty canvas: it embodies possibility.
Graduate Student Senate President Joel Newby told Student Senate last week that local law enforcement had been discussing the potential of a “social host” ordinance, but both Athens and Ohio University officials have said there is no written proposal — and there might never be one.
With the ringing of the pickle horn in Bagel Street Deli at 4 p.m. Friday, the 15th annual Pickle Fest was underway.

If you’ve seen me the past week or so, I’ve been a sight for sore eyes — dark circles, a coffee inevitably in my hand and yawns escaping my mouth constantly. Sure, I’ve had a lot of homework, but there has been something else keeping me up until the wee hours of the morning.

After five years on the job, the city is making strides to replace one of the city’s older pieces of machinery — a big, yellow Kobelco trackhoe.
Despite hopes of a fresh start in Mid-American Conference play, Ohio faced more of the same in a weekend series against Central Michigan.
