Media have double standards about racial bias

Sometimes the media's double standards are too ridiculous to ignore. A few weeks ago, conservative students at UCLA released a recording of a prank phone call they made to Planned Parenthood of Idaho last summer. The student told Autumn Kersey, vice president of development and marketing, that he wanted to make a donation to specifically cover the abortion of an African-American baby ' because, as he said, the less black kids out there

Like You Haven't: OU students 'expect more from UPC'

Our generation is obsessed with celebrities. Television channels, magazines and other media outlets are exclusively devoted to following their every move. People magazine, for example, touts readership of 7.6 million people per month in addition to 803 million pages viewed per month on its online Web site. We are a celebrity-obsessed nation and OU students are no different. Think you disagree? Would we really wear those ugly, '80s-throwback, Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses in neon orange if Lindsay Lohan or Ashlee Simpson would not?

Spring break spent with bodies, broken TV

Well, readers, I've had my much-needed two-week vacation, and now it's time for me to take off my Vacationer Pants and put my Columnist Suspenders back on. Don't ask how the suspenders attach if I'm not wearing pants (hint: it involves quantum mechanics and Erdos numbers). To those of you who only read the print edition of this fine newspaper, you have probably just been shocked by my risqu+

Tasteful?-

Athens City Council members must have a lot of free time on their hands. That is the best available explanation for last week's council meeting, where they approved some absurdly unnecessary regulations for sexually oriented businesses.

Commentary: Golfers, especially the best, must 'respect game'

It has long been said that golf is a game to play forever ' regardless of age, skill or condition. While this is true, what is often forgotten is that golf is regarded as a gentleman's game, and those who partake are constantly reminded to respect the game.

Stranger in a Strange Land: OU student is a tourist in her own college

As I walk across College Green toward Court Street for lunch break, I cannot help but notice the people who spend their own lunch breaks loafing on the ground. There is a rustling sound coming from above me, drawing my attention to the squirrels playing in the trees. This is my image of Athens.

April brings opportunities to diversify life

A famous politician, John Hume, once said: Difference is of the essence of humanity. Difference is an accident of birth and it should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict. The answer to difference is to respect it. Therein lies a most fundamental principle of peace: respect for diversity.

Closing GRID Lab 'a huge mistake'

I am writing this letter in response to the recent news that the GRID Lab of uptown Athens will be closing at the beginning of June. As an 8th grader at Athens Middle School, I go to the GRID Lab regularly, and I've always found it to have a fun-filled and energizing atmosphere for playing video games. Not only do many kids from the middle and high schools go there to play, but they also view it as an uptown destination. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the GRID Lab is a rendezvous point for friends. As there are already very few things for middle- and high school-aged kids in Athens to do, the loss of the GRID Lab will be a major blow to kids looking to have safe fun in the area.
