Your Turn: Bob Ney building at OU Eastern should be renamed

On Nov. 2, an article by Jonathan Hunt appeared in The Athens News informing us that OU officials have no plans to rename the Robert W. Ney Health and Physical Education Center on the Eastern Campus, named in honor of convicted felon and former Congressman Bob Ney. One wonders if officials in Athens or at the Eastern Campus have bothered to consult students about this matter. Has this even been brought to the attention of either campus' Student Senate, or have OU officials decided to make a unilateral decision that affects all of the students, alumni, faculty and staff of the university?

STATE ISSUES

As of press time, Athens County votes for these issues had not been reported because of technical problems.Minimum Wage: Ohio voters passed Issue 2, a constitutional amendment that will raise minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.85 per hour and is the first wage increase since 1996. About 56 percent of Ohio voters supported the issue, which is backed by a coalition of labor organizations. The amendment also requires a hike in the minimum wage with each year that Ohio's cost of living rises.LEARN AND EARN: Voters turned down Issue 3, a proposed amendment that would place up to 31,500 slot machines in nine sites around the state -- approximately 57 percent of Ohio votes cast against the issue. Under the proposed amendment, 30 percent of the revenue generated from the slot machines would fund higher education scholarships and grants.SMOKE LESS OHIO: Smoke Less Ohio, Issue 4 on the ballot, lost the battle of the smoking bans last night, with about 64 percent of Ohio voters casting ballots against the proposed amendment. The issue, primarily sponsored by North Carolina-based R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, aimed to ban smoking in 90 percent of Ohio businesses, excluding bars and other adult establishments. SmokeFreeOhio: About 58 percent of Ohio voters approved Issue 5, a statewide smoking ban that will outlaw smoking in almost all businesses. The SmokeFreeOhio campaign, supported by a coalition of health organizations, is primarily sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Editorial: Clean sweep: Voters paint the state blue as Democrats grab office after office in Columbus and Washington

The corruption of people like Tom Noe, Bob Ney and our soon to be ex-governor Bob Taft, hit a nerve with voters. The citizenry regularly distrusts politicians ' it's the nature of the system ' but suddenly, their distrust was not only justified but also magnified. These people, whom Ohioans had vested power and trust into, had abused the system and neglected their responsibilities.

Charity program deserves applause, recognition

I would truly like to thank Ohio University for implementing the Second Helping program founded by OU student Stephanie Pleli. This program takes the leftover food from the dining halls and donates it to the poor and homeless in southeastern Ohio. OU is one of only a handful of universities in the United States that serves the poor in this way. Hundreds of impoverished individuals and families have benefited from the Second Helping program this year.
