Fall stirs moviegoers expectations

The beginning of school is synonymous with the beginning of the fall season in the minds of many. As students return to the classroom to give their brains an academic overhaul, so do moviegoers return to the cinema expecting more intelligent and thought-provoking films. Here is a preview of this season's movies: September: Corpse Bride (Sept. 23)

Judicial change-up

Only a week ago, it was certain that the composition of the United States Supreme Court would soon change. With Justice Sandra Day O'Connor preparing to retire, President Bush had nominated Judge John G. Roberts, Jr. as her replacement. Though criticized by some liberal groups and leaders as too conservative, the general consensus seemed to dictate that Roberts was a seemingly inoffensive choice for the seat -considering the current president's political leanings. However, with the recent death of Chief Justice of the United States William H. Rehnquist the circumstances surrounding Roberts' nomination have been altered dramatically, and Roberts has gone from being a D.C. Circuit Court judge to a nominee for the highest judicial post in the nation.

AOL Instant Messenger profiles proudly display it. Seven Facebook groups to date exalt it. Countless cheers from Court Street and house balconies proclaim it. The Princeton Review has ranked Ohio University-Athens as the No. 2 Party School in the nation this year.

We in the United States seem to be caught in an ideological conundrum. In reaction to the United Kingdom's recent battles with extremists, the debate about racial profiling has begun anew. Columnists far more educated than myself have claimed that the numerical airline-passenger checking method employed by many security officials is both ineffective and a waste of time.

The summer has brought many changes to the inside and outside of Alden Library. The latest modification to the building targets the second-floor stairs, making them wheelchair accessible.

Athletic department budget up

Ohio University's athletic department received a $300,000 budget increase for the upcoming fiscal year 2005-06. The 2.4 percent budget hike brings the department's total operating budget to $12.8 million. The increase comes in the wake of campus-wide layoffs and departmental budget cuts.
