A few graduate students gathered in the Baker University Center 1954 Lounge last night to hear Provost Kathy Krendl and members of the Presidential Task Force discuss the new vision for the future of Ohio University.
At the Dialogue on the Future of Ohio University forum, Krendl discussed the university's strategic planning process, which is defined by three main components: vision, mission and core values.
What we're trying to do is prepare a plan for the academic future and vision of Ohio University. We want to create a new identity for the institution
Krendl said.
During the discussion, Krendl showed a PowerPoint presentation, which included information about the current and possible future status of OU.
In Ohio, less than 25 percent of the adult population has a bachelor's degree, and there is no expected increase in the 18-to 24-year-old population during the next decade, according to the PowerPoint.
Also, the number of college students coming into Ohio is less than the number leaving the state, Krendl said. OU President Roderick McDavis wants to increase enrollment at OU, and he wants to increase the amount of international students, she added.
The university needs to improve student recruitment and university advocacy, Krendl said.
Throughout the forum, Krendl also addressed OU's guiding principles, mission statement and vision statement.
The major discussion points of the guiding principles were accountability, selective investments, emphasis on community and the value of both in-class and out-of-class experience.
At the beginning of the forum, students received a handout detailing OU's mission statement, which read, Ohio University emphasizes a high-quality learning-centered educational experience by combining undergraduate graduate and professional programs in a residential setting ... providing broad access and outreach through its regional campuses and conducting high quality research across many disciplines.
According to the vision statement, the administration is striving to gain national prominence for OU by showcasing the university's unique ability to engage both undergraduate and graduate students in distinctive and interdisciplinary research activities.
It also states that OU will be a learning-centered, globally aware network of partnerships supported by a diverse mix of students, faculty and staff.
The guiding principles, vision and mission statements all can be viewed on the OU Web site, www.ohio.edu.
Undergraduate students attending tonight's forum, also at 5 p.m. in the Baker Center 1954 Lounge, will view the same presentation but can to ask questions more pertinent to them.
