Higher education officials in Ohio have been pushing dual enrollment programs, which allow high school students to enroll in college classes for high school and post-secondary credit.
But other states have even more directed programs. North Carolina, for example, has specific high schools dedicated to what Ohio calls dual enrollment. Students in those programs can earn a high school diploma and two years of college for five years. The state absorbs the cost.
Many of these programs operating across the country are funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Early College High School Initiative.
Ohio University’s regional campuses have been the biggest outreach arm for the university and have been focused on growing their post-secondary enrollment programs in the past two years.
