Outstanding faculty to be rewarded

Ohio University’s students might receive a number of emails in their inboxes to nominate their favorite professors for awards.

Though OU encourages students to nominate their favorite professors for awards such as the University Professor Award, the university offers other prestigious honors — some of which are peer-nominated.

The Presidential Teacher Award, which receives nominations from faculty, alumni and students, will be notifying potential award recipients by the end of next week and will continue to narrow down the finalists through the rest of the semester.

This award allows the recipients to maintain a title of Presidential Teacher for three years and receive an annual $1,000.

“It will be a panel of six faculty (members), one undergraduate and graduate student,” said Howard Dewald, associate provost for faculty and academic planning. “As chair, I will guide the process. They’ll use some sort of guidance in terms of what they think are qualifying university faculty.”

Faculty can also nominate their colleagues for the Distinguished Professor Award — which requires nominees to have acquired tenure and completed five years of service at OU.

This award is the highest recognition that any permanent faculty member can receive during their time at the university, according to the provost’s website.

“A broad array of awards is really important,” said Elizabeth Sayrs, Faculty Senate chair.

Distinguished Professor 2011 award recipient Mark Halliday said in an email that he was honored to receive the award because of what it represents.

“There are many kinds of excellence in OU’s faculty, and awards such as Distinguished Professor and University Professor can only give special recognition to a few of the many deserving scholars and teachers on campus,” Halliday said.

“Such an award is a great satisfaction to the individual recipients, certainly, while serving the larger purpose of emphasizing the university’s pride in its faculty.”
