APD reports at Greek life houses range from assaults to stolen cushions

The Post requested all Athens Police Department incident reports for all interfraternity council-affiliated fraternities and known annexes from Aug. 1, 2018, until Oct. 15, 2019. 

36 E. State St., ACACIA

A man was charged with disorderly conduct on Aug. 31, outside of 36 E. State St., according to an APD report. The man was 22 years old and was arrested at 12:32 a.m.

The man was “passed out” behind the house and when the officer arrived, residents took him to the man. He was cited and released to a friend.

The fine was $40 and $110 of other costs.

23 S. Congress St., Beta Theta Pi

An assault report was taken Sept. 12, in the yard of 23 S. Congress St.

The victim, who had a “minor injury,” was a 19-year-old woman. It occurred at about 12:30 a.m. The offender was suspected of using alcohol.

A theft was reported on the street outside of the house on Sept. 15, 2019, for a stolen cell phone.

117 E. State St., Theta Chi

Theft was reported on July 4, just before 11 a.m. for a stolen purse.

An arrest was made and charges were filed against a student resident.

32 N. College St., Pi Kappa Phi

APD responded on March 23 to a report of criminal damaging. The suspect was believed to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs, according to the APD report.

50 E. State St., Phi Kappa Tau

An assault was reported outside of 50 E. State Street at 1 a.m. on Sept. 28. Three people were assaulted and two of them were transported to OhioHealth O’Bleness. 

There was a possible internal injury as well as unconsciousness and an apparent minor injury to a 19-year-old, according to the report.

8 N. College St., Phi Kappa Psi

Grand theft was reported on March 23. The student who reported it, a resident of 8 N. College St., said his ATM card was stolen and used at two local ATM machines.

8 Church St., Alpha Omicron Pi

Underage consumption was reported outside of 8 Church St. just after 3:00 a.m. on Sept.14. The arrestee was issued a summons for Athens Municipal Court.

40 N. College St., Delta Gamma

An assault was reported on the street outside of 40 N. College St., Sept. 8, 2018, at about 3 a.m.

A woman had an apparent minor injury. Charges were filed and a summons was issued. The suspect pleaded not guilty and the case was dismissed, according to a police report.

There was also a report of disorderly conduct by intoxication on Jan. 26 outside of the house.

The man was found on the porch after a complaint that someone was banging on the front door was reported. All of the contents of his wallet were spilled on the porch and he could not tell the officer where he lived or what street he was on.

He was arrested for his safety and was released to his roommate, according to the report.

55 Mill St., Delta Zeta

Criminal damaging was reported on Oct. 21, 2018, in the parking lot, according to the report.

The rear windshield wiper of a man’s Subaru was damaged.

On Nov. 18, 2018, a report of petty theft and obstructing official business was taken.

The officer saw someone take two cushions from a chair on the porch of 55 Mill St. The student then ran from the officer when he attempted to talk to him. The man dropped the cushions while running and was apprehended at Palmer Place, but only one cushion was recovered.

Another instance of criminal damaging was reported on May 24 for damaged doors.

A man was cited on May 26 for having an open container of liquor or beer on the street outside of 55 Mill St. He was given a citation after he lied and dropped the can of alcohol and reportedly lied to the officer.

On July 13, APD responded to a criminal mischief complaint. Officers took a report of a fence spindle that was broken off.

6 S. College St., Pi Beta Phi

Marijuana was reportedly found at 6 S. College St. on Nov. 4, 2018.

45 Mill St., Formerly Sigma Pi, ACACIA Annex house

A nuisance party report was made Sept. 9, 2018. The house was hosting a party with loud music, which was deemed a nuisance and shut down at about 2:17 a.m. 

The music was turned off and officers were about to leave when the resident began to argue with the officers. The resident continued to yell after a warning and was arrested.

Officers responded to 45 Mill St. for an unresponsive student, Collin Wiant, on Nov. 12, 2018. Wiant was transported to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead, according to a redacted report.

A month after Wiant’s death, underage consumption of alcohol was reported on Dec. 14, 2018. The student was seen urinating on the sidewalk in front of 45 Mill St. He smelled like alcohol and was found to be 20 years old. He also had a fake ID, which was taken and destroyed.

Aggravated possession of drugs was reported on Aug. 19. A report was taken, but the details of the incident were not reported.
