Weekender Briefs: Learn about pawpaws in Ohio, support multicultural businesses

Friday, Sept. 16

The Black Alumni Reunion, hosted by the Alumni Association and University Advancement, will bring a variety of events all weekend including a gala, a memorial run, networking opportunities and much more. This signature tradition takes place on campus every three years.

Admission: $15, additional charges for some events

Multicultural Pop Up Shop will be located in the Baker Theater Lounge 240/242 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is hosted by the Division of Diversity and Inclusion and will display different products from multicultural businesses on campus.

Admission: Free

The 24th Annual Ohio Pawpaw Festival is a weekend-long event at Lake Snowden in Albany, Ohio. There will be different events like pawpaw eating contests, cook-offs and more. There will also be a variety of local breweries and live music from local artists. The festival will be from 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday, 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission: Weekend pass: $50, Friday-only and Sunday-only: $15, Saturday-only: $20, children aged 12 and under: free and there is a $5 discount for active/retired military, Albany residents and seniors aged 60 and above.

Fiesta Latina at The Union, 18 W. Union St., is being hosted by the Latino Student Union for a night full of Latino music and dancing. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Admission: Ages 18-20: $5, ages 21 and up: $3

Saturday, Sept. 17

Fall Bike Ride with the First Presbyterian Church of Athens will be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The group will meet at the Athens Public Library, 30 Home St., at 10 a.m. and proceed to the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. The group will stop for lunch at the Eclipse Company Store before heading back to the library.

Admission: Free

Athens Farmers Market is hosting Ohio University Day, where students will be entered in a raffle for a chance to win an Athens Farmers Market gift basket. The market will be in the front parking lot of the Market on State from 9 a.m. to noon. The market sells a variety of fresh produce and other products from local vendors.

Admission: Free

Athens Art Market will also be at the Market on State from 9 a.m. to noon. The market is hosted by the Athens Art Guild and will be selling a variety of pieces such as ceramics, jewelry, paintings and more.

Admission: Free

The Fall Vendor Excalibur, hosted by H&D Productions, will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St. The event will feature home-made crafts, baked goods and much more.

Admission: Free for attendees, $30-$50 for vendors

Sunday, Sept. 18

Trivia Night will take place at 6 p.m. at the Little Fish Brewing Company, 8675 Armitage Rd. The host will bring five rounds of eight questions, with up to eight members per competing team. The winning team will receive one drink voucher per person. 

Admission: Free

Pawpaw 4 Miler is a four-mile run/walk that starts at 9 a.m. at Lake Snowden in Albany, Ohio. There will also be a one-mile fun run. This low-key event ends with a cold pawpaw popsicle.

Admission: 4 Miler: $20, Fun Run: $10
