Weekender Briefs: Enjoy holiday films, doodles, art fairs and more

Friday, Dec. 2:

Cardio Dance Group Fitness Class at Ping Center, 82 S. Green Drive, invites participants from 2 to 2:45 p.m. The fast-paced workout uses easily followed dances to allow participants to workout and have fun. No dance experience is necessary, but pre-registration is required. 

Admission: Free

Holiday Film Series at the Athena kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St. Each showing in the series features a Christmas movie with the price of admission as a canned good or cash donation to local food pantries. Stop by for the “Edward Scissorhands” Friday, or make one of the other dates: Dec. 3 at 1 and 3 p.m.; Dec. 10 at 3 p.m.; Dec. 17 at 1 and 3 p.m. or Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. 

Admission: A canned good or cash donation

New Clear Future headlines the show at Smiling Skull Saloon, 108 W. Union St., from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Ohio Valley hardcore band returns, joined for this concert by fellow bands Rat Ship, Mad World and Rat Faced Bastards.

Admission: $5

Saturday, Dec. 3:

Artkinglot Small Business Winter Get Down lasts from noon to 4 p.m. at Tavolino, 9 N. Shafer St. The pop up art fair will feature unique handcrafted items exclusively by local small businesses. 

Admission: Free

The Ohio University Honor Band, Orchestra and Choir Festival begins at 4 p.m. at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, 33 University Terrace. The Honor Bands perform first at 4 p.m., followed by the OU Symphony Orchestra Concert featuring Honor Orchestra participants at 5:30 and the Honor Choir Festival  Concert with Ohio University Singers and Choral Union at 8 p.m.

Admission: Free

Benefest 2022 concludes Saturday night at The Union, 18 W. Union St., with doors opening at 7 p.m. This night’s performers feature seven of the 21 total acts spanning three nights, including Tomorrow Daily, Rent Free and Laughing Chimes. Proceeds benefit the Gathering Place and Stuart's Opera House afterschool music program.

Admission: $8 

Sunday, Dec. 4:

Athens Art Guild Holiday Market lasts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St. Shop local for the holidays at this community art market.

Admission: Free

Holiday Doodles with Nancy offers a fun art lesson at Chosen Pathways Spiritual Emporium, 400 E. State St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Nancy Baur will teach participants a fun doodling style, perfect for holiday cards or decorating gift wrap. All supplies will be provided to attendees, who should email kellygreenmantle@gmail.com or DM Chosen Pathways to register.

Admission: $10

The Athens Community Jazz Ensemble Holiday Concert takes the Glidden Recital Hall stage, 3 Health Center Drive, at 8 p.m. This is OU’s final event of the fall semester, so catch some jazz in person or via livestream.
