Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban's split after 19 years

After 19 years of marriage, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have decided to call it quits. Just last year, Kidman spoke to People Magazine about her love for the country star, “I'm so lucky that I have Keith, who's just my love, my deep, deep love.” With the announcement of their separation, fans are taking a look back at the pair's almost two decades of commitment.

Kidman and Urban met for the first time back in 2005 at the G’Day USA gala in Los Angeles. Though the two started dating a few months later, Kidman told comedian and former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that Urban didn’t call her for four months after they met.

“I had such a crush on him, and he wasn’t interested in me. It’s true,” Kidman said. “He didn’t call me for four months.”

In May of 2006, the couple announced their engagement at the 30th anniversary UNIFEM gala. Later that year, Kidman and Urban would get married in June in a fantastical wedding where Kidman wore a beautiful ivory Balenciaga dress. They would honeymoon in French Polynesia and stay at the St. Regis Bora Bora.

However, the honeymoon bliss would be cut short in October 2006 when Kidman staged an intervention for Urban after his alcohol addiction relapse. Inevitably, Urban checked himself into a rehabilitation center focused on alcohol abuse.  His album "Love, Pain, & the whole crazy thing" was already finished and still released in November 2006. Urban was released after three months.

The former couple decided to move to a farm in the southwest of Nashville together in November 2007, and announced Kidman’s pregnancy with their first baby in January 2008.

Kidman and Urban welcomed their first daughter, Sunday Rose, to the world in July 2008. Sunday Rose is Kidman’s third child, having two adopted children, Bella and Connor Cruise, from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise. Kidman and Urban’s second daughter, Faith Margaret, was born in December 2010.

In September 2014, Kidman’s father, Dr. Anthony Kidman, died while visiting Kidman’s sister in Singapore. Urban sang “Amazing Grace” at the funeral.

In March 2018 at South by Southwest (SXSW), Urban talked about his struggles with addiction, music and his support system. He discussed what he had learn about himself and how to help others through his music.

Kidman and Urban's daughters made a guest appearance at the 2021 Golden Globes from their couch as the award show was virtual due to the pandemic. A rare public appearance for the family, as the couple has historically tried to keep their daughters out of the spotlight.

In June 2021, both Kidman and Urban posted 15th anniversary posts, with Kidman’s leading slightly more on the scandalous side. Kidman posted a picture of Urban licking her neck, with only the lower half of their faces showing.

During a virtual interview in January 2022, Kidman expressed her love for Urban. "That man is the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Kidman said. Kidman and Urban would later attend the 2022 Academy Awards together in person.

Urban played never-before-seen clips from his and Kidman’s wedding while performing the song “Without You” during the first night of Urban’s second Vegas residency in March 2023.

Kidman and Urban attended both the 2023 and 2024 Met Galas together, with Kidman’s interview about their 18-year marriage taking place in between the two events in April 2024.

On Sept. 29, an anonymous source confirmed Kidman and Urban had separated. One day later, Kidman filed for divorce and was granted primary custody of both her and Urban’s daughters.

Urban is currently on his High and Alive world tour. Kidman made her first public appearance since she filed for divorce at an amFAR benefit event in Dallas, Texas. Kidman presented the creator of her latest TV show, “Lioness," Taylor Sheridan, with an award.
