Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE) was one of the 18 programs selected in the United States to play host to 23 teachers from another country.
In an initiative by the Brazilian government, more than 3,000 people were sent to the U.S. for English and teacher training. For six weeks, the teachers will gain experience by taking courses such as teaching methodology, English fluency development, American culture and history, according to a news release.
“OPIE is delighted to have been chosen to host this group of teachers,” said Erica Coffelt, a trainer and director of the program, in the release. “I look forward to our exchange of ideas and culture throughout their stay. Hopefully, the exchange will continue even after they return to Brazil.”
By maintaining a relationship with the teachers that are staying on the OU campus, relations between U.S. and Brazil will be to increase cooperation for education. The high school English teacers arrived Jan. 13 to begin a six-week professional developement program.
"At a time when Brazil’s economy is expanding rapidly, and Brazil and the United States are forging unprecedented ties in trade, energy and scientific development,” said IIE president Allan Goodman in the press release. “We look to higher education as another area where our two countries should seek much stronger cooperation.”
