For most of us, 2020 stopped after February — at least, nothing felt real after then. Whether it was the COVID-19 pandemic, the death of so many loved celebrities, the protests for Black Lives Matter or the bananas 2020 U.S. election, so much happened this year, and it never slowed down. The only bright spot was the music — particularly, the melancholy songs that helped us cry our way through this dumpster fire of a year.

In a year that has caused such turmoil and heartache across the world, Taylor Swift has put all her efforts toward creativity and graced listeners with not one but two surprise albums. Following July’s release of Folklore, Swift has released its sister album, Evermore. Riddled with the same raw lyricism and folk sound as Folklore, Evermore further shows listeners that Swift is a domineering songwriter in today’s industry.

IRIS is an LA-based independent singer and songwriter. She was featured in LA Weekly, in which she shared, “I’m trying to do more fun pop-disco inspired things but also integrate more soul and rock vibes into it.” It is obvious when listening to her music that IRIS enjoys mixing several sounds, from older styles to new.

In the label’s early years, ScHoolboy Q was often pegged as a secondary member on Top Dawg Entertainment’s roster. The independent label was fraught with new and exciting voices such as Ab-Soul, who released Control System to critical acclaim, and Kendrick Lamar, whose first two commercial projects, especially Good Kid, m.A.A.d city, were considered roaring successes.

Tucker Pillsbury, more commonly known by his stage name, ROLE MODEL, has just released his third EP, our little angel. Pillsbury has yet to release an album, though there is no denying he should. However, ROLE MODEL is still in the midst of developing his fanbase and his name. He is excelling nevertheless, by consistently releasing singles, promoting his work actively on social media and reaching listeners worldwide through multiple streaming platforms.

Diving into the broad idea of a concept album, California-based alternative band The Neighbourhood is back with its fourth studio album, Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones. Pulling inspiration from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, The Neighbourhood’s frontman Jesse Rutherford takes on the persona of the titular character, Chip Chrome. Decked out in silver-paint and chrome-colored attire, Rutherford ceases to exist on the album, and Chip Chrome is now leading the band.

Conway the Machine is a Buffalo rapper and founding member of Griselda Records along with his frequent collaborators and family members Westside Gunn and Benny the Butcher.
