The transition from high school to college is likely the most significant adjustment many will make in their lifetime. The good news is that the thought of it is more stressful than the actual transition. As a college freshman, I can’t offer a lot of advice, but here’s five things I wish I knew at this time last year.

Martin Luther King Jr. would have turned 94 last Sunday had he not been assassinated in 1968 at 39 years old. In memory for all he accomplished and could have done, Ohio University celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year with a week of events.

When students log on to Kitty Consolo’s class, they are immediately met with a cheerful, vibrant professor who has a passion for teaching her students about the importance of nutrition as well as physical and mental wellness. What the students may not know, however, is they are being taught by an accomplished runner and Olympian.

The first person from Gen Z was elected to Congress this past November, but Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), among other newly elected officials of the 118th Congress, was not able to be sworn in until the Speaker of the House of Representatives was decided, which didn’t happen until Jan. 7.

As 2023 begins, many may be anticipating Jan. 1 as a fresh start, a time to begin a new hobby or change their lifestyle for the better. Others may see it as just another day on the calendar, and if they want to make a change, it does not have to be at the start of a new year. Between the Orthodox Union’s summit on antisemitism currently taking place in New York and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s announcement on Monday that an interagency group will be formed to “increase and better coordinate U.S. government efforts to counter antisemitism, Islamophobia, and related forms of bias and discrimination within the United States,” there seems to be no shortage of concern around the rise in antisemitism. The formation of the White House group, it should be noted, comes after a letter from over 100 lawmakers and advocates at the White House summit which called for fears about the rise in antisemitism to be addressed.

I have always felt a tinge of jealousy around Christmas. Not because I want to decorate a tree or I like the idea of a random old man coming into my house in the middle of the night, but because of winter break. Winter break is purposefully put during the time of Christmas and the New Year, which are also both federal holidays. I remember thinking to myself “What about my holy days? What about my New Year?”
