Every school year brings new changes in Athens, and this year, one of them was the addition of Brian Stephens, a new assistant professor of African American Studies, interdisciplinary arts and media studies. Stephens joined the Ohio University faculty this past July and has already created a name for himself. Combining his passion for activism and education, he is actively creating an environment for students of all backgrounds to feel seen.

With the recent writer’s strike, movie fanatics can’t help but notice the survival of independent film during these tough times. Unsurprisingly, indie films were the first to meet the standards of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) union due to the freedom of their creators. The real surprise lies in the reaction amongst audiences. Indie films are loved by movie-goers and are forcing their way back into the theater; why now?

Last week, I wrote about Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis. I felt that its status as a lazily designed cash grab tarnished its legendary namesake by association. I still feel that way, for the record – since writing that column, I’ve barely touched Ever Crisis. However, it did remind me of just how much I love Final Fantasy VII itself. So, for the last week, I have fully immersed myself in the world of Final Fantasy VII. I’ve been reading the books, playing the spinoffs and above all else, tracking the production of next year’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It’s the second part in the ambitious “Final Fantasy VII Remake” trilogy, which started with 2020's aptly titled Final Fantasy VII Remake.

On Sunday night, after 146 days of striking, the Writers Guild of America, or the WGA, reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, or AMPTP. The WGA has been on strike since early May, following an ongoing disagreement with the AMPTP.

It would not be an exaggeration to call Final Fantasy VII one of the most important video games ever made. The adventures of Cloud Strife and co. have left an undeniable impact that can be felt in not just every modern RPG but, for better or for worse, nearly every modern game. Its cinematic storytelling, dense and complicated worldbuilding, expansive map and rich build-crafting set a standard that is still being chased nearly 30 years later.

Los Angeles has a lot happening almost all of the time, but right now Hollywood is on pause. The Writers Guild of America, or WGA, strike began on May 2 due to growth in A.I. technology and what it means for anyone who works in the entertainment industry. Despite the fear and the need for new contracts, nothing is being done to ease these fears. Additionally, there have been controversies surrounding what some celebrities are doing about the issues at hand.
