As you all may be aware from our past few columns, February is Black History Month. Here is a list of four influential queer black people that you should know.
Today, December 1, is World AIDS Day, a day to remember those we have lost, support those who are living with HIV, learn the facts, end the stigma and bust myths, as well as raise awareness about AIDS and HIV.
November is Transgender Awareness Month with Transgender Awareness Week being the week that Nov. 20 falls in. November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance, Transgender Awareness Month is a newer month that we at Ohio University as well as at many other places stemmed from Transgender Awareness Week. Making it a month gives us 30 days to discuss the issues that trans individuals face on a daily and highlight trans identities rather than the seven that fall in a week.
Bullying is defined by stopbullying.gov as “...unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.” For many LGBT youth bullying is an everyday reality. GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey from 2015 found that 85.2 percent reported being verbally harassed compared to 74.1 percent in 2013 and 48.6 percent reported that they have experienced cyberbullying. This is down but only slightly from 49.0 percent in 2013. These numbers are high and alarming.
