Don’t count the Bobcats out.
Baseball legend Yogi Berra once said “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”
After a tough loss to Eastern Michigan on Monday, Ohio (6-5, 6-5 Mid-American Conference) has redeemed itself. The Bobcats looked like their usual selves Friday as they battled hard and swept the Miami RedHawks 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-22) in Oxford. Even when they pulled ahead, the Bobcats didn’t slow down, which was the key to their success. Here are the numbers to know from Ohio’s 3-0 win against Miami:
Ohio played arguably one of its worst matches all season. Communication on the court just wasn’t there for the Bobcats as they fell to Eastern Michigan 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) in the Eagles’s Convocation Center on Monday. In set two, the Bobcats were in it the whole time but just couldn’t finish out the match. In sets one and three, The Bobcats fell behind early but were unable to bounce back, giving the Eagles the win. Here are the numbers to know from Ohio’s 3-0 loss:
On the first play of the match, Lauren Park’s kill attempt was blocked. On the second play, the Bobcats could not return the serve.
After falling to Ball State in five sets on Thursday night, the Bobcats came into Friday afternoon’s game two with an edge and desire to send the Cardinals packing early. Ohio dominated, sweeping the Cardinals 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 26-24) to improve to 5-4 on the season.
On the first play of set two during Ohio’s match against Ball State on Thursday, junior outside hitter Lauren Park got set on the 10-foot line, took her approach, swung and landed the ball on the other side of the court like she had done so many other times that night.
After yet another week without gameplay, Ohio is ready to get back on the court. The Bobcats (4-3, 4-3 Mid-American Conference) will face off against Ball State (5-5, 5-5 Mid-American Conference) at home in a two-game series on Thursday and Friday.
Bad news for the Bobcats.
Ohio is preparing for what may be its toughest match so far this season. After sweeping Buffalo in both of its matches last week, Ohio will travel to Bowling Green to take on the undefeated Falcons. The Falcons swept Ball State in their last series and have swept six of their eight matches this season. Ohio will have to bring its high energy and solid communication to Stroh Center in order to be able to get a pair of wins this week.
For the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has been the main factor in deciding how college has been organized. Eleven months after Ohio’s athletic programs were halted in March 2020, the pandemic is still affecting Ohio’s protocols on and off the field. The Bobcats feel those effects every time they walk onto the court or into the locker room.
Ohio has done something that it hasn’t done since Nov. 21, 2019: win two matches in a row.
The Bobcats enter the weekend with confidence after sweeping Buffalo 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) yet again in The Convo. The Bobcats (4-2, 4-2 Mid-American Conference) are now 42-5 against Buffalo (0-8, 0-8 Mid-American Conference) since the Bulls joined the Mid-American Conference in 1998.
Ohio made some major changes to its lineup Thursday night against Buffalo.
The Bobcats have yet to win out in a series this season.
Ohio Volleyball has had a very nontraditional start to its season. The Bobcats season-opening match on Jan. 22 lasted a full 24 hours, due to a citywide power outage in Athens, Ohio. Then, Ohio’s series against Eastern Michigan was postponed because of COVID-19 related issues with the Eagles. Now, the Bobcats are looking for some normalcy as they travel to Akron on Thursday to take on the Zips over two days.
The players on the benches held their breath. The Bobcats and the Chippewas had volleyed back and forth for a minute straight during the second set of their second match on Saturday. After the Bobcats won the point, and the set, the energy was electric. That same energy propelled them to win out the rest of the match.
Ever since I was little, sports have been fascinating to me. The feeling of waking up the morning of a big game or match was one of exhilaration, even if I was just merely watching the game.
