While brainstorming ways to evolve Tunes with Tate and spice up the weekly content, I was surprised that I had yet to do anything TikTok-related, so I whipped up a playlist of the first handful of TikTok songs I could think of as well as some that were requested through Instagram polls (check them out every Thursday on our page, @thepostathens).

Born Yolanda Quartey, the Bristol, England, native has been active in the music industry since 2003. Her solo EP wasn’t released until 2016, but she had previously been performing as a backup vocalist for artists such as The Chemical Brothers, Ginger Wildheart, Massive Attack and, most notably, Iggy Azalea. In addition, she was the lead singer of the country/soul band Phantom Limb.

Machine Gun Kelly had a busy year in 2020. It’s hard to tell if people talked more about his new album, his relationship with Megan Fox or the opening of his coffee house, 27 Club Coffee, in Cleveland, Ohio, but all three had their fair share of the headlines.

Most people know of the alternative folk band The Lumineers from their single “Ho Hey” of their self-titled debut album, but there’s a lot more to them than that. At the tail end of 2012, they found themselves on the 2013 Grammy nomination list for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album. “Ho Hey” stayed on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart for eight back-to-back weeks in the same year. The band also went on a sold out tour in the U.S., U.K. and Australia; some of the shows even had to be moved to larger venues, as the band garnered a larger crowd than anticipated.

Eric Church released his first studio album in 2006, and right off the bat had three singles-- “Guys Like Me”, “Two Pink Lines” and “How ‘Bout You”--in the top 20 of the Billboard country charts. He started off strong, to say the least, and hasn’t stopped releasing hits since. His 2011 album Chief not only became his first number one album but also got him his first two number-one singles, “Springsteen” and “Drink in My Hand”. He also got another number one single with “The Only Way I Know”, featuring himself, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean, which was recorded for Jason Aldean’s album Night Train. In total, he has five number-one hits and 21 top 10 hits.

There are few people in this world who can break the internet, and Ariana Grande is one of them. The Instagram post announcing her new album release has 52,314 comments and over 4 million likes. As we’ve seen throughout this tumultuous year, artists have had to adapt their pre-planned releases and products of quarantine to the pandemic.

Where I’m from in Northeast Ohio, country music is not uncommon. However, it’s not my go-to genre and I’m unfamiliar with a lot of the artists being nominated at the Country Music Awards.

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it's that I love Taylor Swift. I’ve been listening to her music since I was 6 years old when “You Belong With Me” was on every radio station. That being said, I was elated when my family agreed to review her eighth studio album, folklore.

As I'm sure is the case with many others, I don’t know if I would’ve survived quarantine without Spotify Premium. For me, there was never a better time to finally listen to all the music my friends had been suggesting for months. However, old habits die hard, so there were a multitude of days where my favorites were blasting through a speaker.
