Our local political races are taking on the ugliness of national politics. The Republican contender for Athens County Commissioner has outspent Democratic nominee Chris Chmiel three to one. Chmiel has been attacked with fear mongering, petty insults and outright lies (such as calling Chmiel a “career politician” and an “Art Gish protégé”). I hope voters have the good sense to see through these divisive tactics and vote for Chmiel. Party affiliation matters, and the ideas (and behavior) of Republicans and Democrats are vastly different. I am proud to be a Democrat, and while I don’t agree with 100 percent of the party’s platform, I am certain that Republicans would move us in the wrong direction. In this two-party system, we not only vote for individuals, but also their party. For government to work well we need trust and cooperation among our representatives. Our local Democratic Party has chosen Chris Chmiel as our Democratic candidate —now it’s our turn to vote him into office. Please urge your friends and neighbors to vote for Democrat Chris Chmiel. He is a careful, thoughtful and common sense leader with a track record of achievement.
