Your Turn: Athens' culture adds to college experience
June 5, 2008As a graduating senior, I have only one regret in my college career here at Ohio University, and that is not appreciating the culture that is unique only to Athens. Most students at OU go through the days without a fleeting thought of being a part of the Athens community. It has taken me four years to pause, look around and recognize what a special place Athens is. Away from papers, tests and crazy parties, Athens provides us students with such a unique opportunity to experience its environment, food and music that you never knew existed. The environment of Athens is so rich in beauty that it is essential for students to experience it. From the bike path that goes all the way to Hocking College to the nature trails in the Ridges to the rolling hills of Stroud's Run to Bong Hill that overlooks Athens, a students has not truly experienced this town if they have not explored outside past campus. Being outside, you will likely work up an appetite, and Athens provides some of the best food for people to eat. From O'Betty's variety of hotdogs to Bagel Street Deli's plethora of bagel sandwiches to the one-of-a-kind Burrito Buggy to Casa Cantina's organic menu, these places will provide an exciting atmosphere and surely get rid of those hunger pangs.-

New IFC recruitment contract is unfair, invalid
June 5, 2008Fraternities on this campus shouldn't even bother with recruitment efforts this fall, thanks to a new recruitment contract issued by the Interfraternity Council (IFC). The new contract is a near carbon copy of the contract used by the Women's Panhellenic Association (WPA) ' in fact, an early draft of the IFC contract obtained by this columnist still has some of the language of the WPA contract that IFC had initially failed to remove. It should be obvious that fraternities do not operate in the same way that sororities do, but aside from that this new contract is both unfair and invalid in that it constrains recruitment efforts without the express consent of OU's fraternities.
Your Turn: Sign language classes should be open to all
June 5, 2008It saddens me that at a school that I both pay for and respect, they will not let non-HSLS students take sign language. It is a four-credit-hour course that I believe should be offered to all majors at Ohio University. As a person who grew up working with people with disabilities, along with having deaf members in my extended family, I looked forward to coming to a big institution and learning abilities such as sign language. It is restrictions like these that further widen the gap between the people who can and cannot communicate with the hearing-impaired and deaf. I hope this letter strikes an emotion in someone out there and they too find this to be ridiculous.

Post Editorial: Printing problems
June 5, 2008At Ohio University, increasing revenue seems to be a euphemism for sticking it to students. Case in point: the new printing policy, which applies to several campus computer labs, including Alden Library. Students will no longer receive a free 50-page quota per quarter, but instead will be charged a flat 3-cent-per-page fee.

Your Turn: 'Climate terrorists' deter action against global warming
June 5, 2008While some have predicted the sure demise of legislation to cap and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Safe Climate Act will pass. Whether we rise to the occasion or allow the greatest political buy-off in history by the fossil fuel industries and delay this critical legislation has yet to be seen. One thing is clear: People will be clamoring for far more action much faster in coming years as the masses realize what scientists know today. With the media largely bought-off by the coal, oil and auto industries, there is woefully little coverage of what should be daily front-page news as the biggest emergency ever known to humanity.

June 5, 2008Local Athens restaurants are participating in the green restaurant movement by trying to decrease their ecological footprint and increase their support for farmers from the area.
Research medical options at OU, monitor your own health
June 5, 2008Students need to become more educated on their own health and the services offered to them during their college years. While steps are currently being taken to improve the conditions and services offered here at Ohio University's Hudson Health Center, they are still poor at best. The plight of freshman Molly Millsop may be one of the worst, but surely not the only terrible experience documented.
Post Editorial: Taking the hint
June 5, 2008The Post Editorial Board, November 7, 2007: Losing a million dollars in the first year of any business is a very bad thing. But OU's Dining Services either didn't learn this lesson or perhaps thinks the principle doesn't apply to it. G? No one seems to be considering perhaps the best way to generate interest and make some money off a potentially failed restaurant: allowing students with Super meal plans to spend their meals in West 82.
