Recently, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling outed her beloved character Albus Dumbledore as a homosexual. The move was met with controversy in a culture that, despite its modernity, remains uncomfortable with alternative lifestyles. Rowling is allowed whatever artistic and political freedoms she desires, but her revelation does offer us an opportunity to reassess traditional values and question the place of homosexuality in a free society.

Your Turn: Law director needs commitment to public service

I believe a public official should have a commitment to community service. Garry Hunter has demonstrated his commitment to community service by being a member of The Plains United Methodist Church for 42 years, a 25-year member of the Salvation Army Board, a former member of both the Kiwanis and the Athens Foundation, a volunteer, legal counsel for the Athens High School McClure Education Foundation, a volunteer, legal counsel for the Nelsonville High School Restoration Foundation and member of the community Improvement Corporation. I support Garry Hunter for re-election as Athens City Law Director.
