Spring Football: Defense strong in last scrimmage
Apr. 22, 2007If Saturday's Green & White game was any indication of what's to come later this fall, those expecting a different style of team from last season will be disappointed.

This commentary comes in response to the April 19 article, Sororities counteract fight for positive body image written by Alex Jabs. I'd like to first thank Ms. Jabs for presenting the Ohio University community with the traditional, generic stereotypes and generalizations of greeks and greek life that have remained intact due to the ignorant viewpoints presented by people who aren't a part of the greek system. Her narrow-minded and extremely biased viewpoint of greek life only furthers the dangerous stereotypes of greek life as an institution, giving all individuals outside of greek life the impression that we greeks are nothing more than members of an unhealthy cult.
After more than a decade of combining research and academic service, the George V. Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs was given school status.
Alex Jabs's commentary on sorority life is the epitome of ignorance. It has been some time since I have read a commentary so acidic and spiteful toward a student organization that benefits not only this campus, but the nation as a whole. Contrary to her knowledge based off of Will Ferrell movies, greek life is an enriching experience that greatly benefits those who participate. The occasional community service events that are made to create a good image are in fact extremely beneficial to the community. Delta Gamma's recent philanthropy event of Anchor Splash raised well over $1000 for charity.
Before the weekend started, outfielder Debbie Szalejko and her teammates were looking to get a sweep of Akron to solidify their chances at a top spot in the Mid-American Conference
Freshman year, I became a member of Delta Zeta by going through formal recruitment. After that day, the girls in your pledge class start new member education, where every member must learn about her sorority in and out. During this time, I was never subjected to having my fat circled, my breast size analyzed or been challenged to a puking contest. I can go further to say that the Delta Zeta sorority stands strong by a Zero Tolerance Hazing Policy that every sorority must abide by. Not only was I treated with respect, but I was able to become involved in several philanthropic activities. Delta Zeta's main goal was to support the hearing- and speech-impaired. The Ohio University chapter, along with Delta Zetas nationwide, raise money for organizations such as Sound Beginnings, which make mothers aware of the need for newborn hearing tests and also Gallaudet University, the only four-year school to offer an education solely for the deaf.
In response to the article about Athletic Director Hocutt's request for more funds, I am shocked! What happened to the four sports that were cut; wasn't that to save money? And what about there being no records about how previous monies were spent? I am very confused!
Editors note: This is the first in a five-part series detailing the evaluations of Ohio University deans. Only five deans were evaluated because first-year deans are not evaluated.
A revision of Gov. Ted Strickland's proposed education budget has changed the estimated funding figures for some Athens County schools. Although Athens City School District and Federal-Hocking School District will see no change in state aid in 2008, the districts will receive about $34,000 and $60,000, respectively, in additional aid in 2009.
Despite strongly-voiced concerns of Ohio University's budget strength, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved the $7.2 million Porter Hall addition and Anderson Laboratory demolition project at its meeting Friday.
Although he was impressed by the maturity and improvement of his young quarterbacks this spring, coach Frank Solich still has senior Brad Bower slotted as the team's starter going into the fall.
Long-distance races treated the Ohio women's track team well.
After Monday's tragedy at Virginia Tech, I am shocked and appalled that anyone can suggest that the solution to gun violence is to give more people guns! Andrew Wargo seems to think that guns in the hands of the good guys will save lives and that the bad guy will stop simply because someone threatens them back. It is exactly this kind of kill-or-be-killed way of thinking that makes the United States the most violent developed nation in the world. We have much bigger problems as a culture if the only way to be safe is for everyone to possess deadly force. It is obvious that we as a society can't responsibly handle the freedom to bear arms. Expanding that freedom is certainly not the answer.
D.P. Dough no longer has the monopoly on calzones in Athens.
Jeremie Rehak knew that making the Ohio baseball team would be no easy task.
Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling Services is hosting events throughout the month of April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, aimed at educating the public about sexual assault prevention.
Athens residents and off-campus Ohio University students can throw away extra trash without having to pay the usual extra-bag fees beginning Monday during the city's spring clean-up week.
One of the most exhilarating stages of real life is set to take the stage through two legal dramas playing Sunday at Ohio University.
I'm sure that The Post will be swamped with letters in regard to Alex Jabs' outspoken article about Greek life at OU and in general. For those who agree with Ms. Jabs, I don't blame you. Those who aren't involved in Greek life have a very ignorant and narrow-minded view of sorority girls and frat-tastic men. I think I speak for all in Greek life when I say, don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Although I am not in Delta Zeta or Alpha Xi Delta, I would be completely and utterly humiliated and infuriated at revealing such horrible and untrue comments about these sororities. Perhaps Jabs is knocking these girls because the bond they have together is unbreakable, and with her narcissistic and supercilious attitude, it is hard to get such kinds of life-long friendships (I bet the author would be surprised I know such big words, seeing as all my sorority-girl brain can absorb is sex and beer and being naked). For future reference Ms. Jabs, don't throw a referenced article out on the table if you haven't experienced it for yourself.
Armed with an endless list of influences and an appetite for genre-melding, Blackcoin is bringing its unclassifiable collage of sound to Athens tonight.
