Broken Chords: Media flood could drown rap

Last week, while slothfully staring at the television, I found myself completely aware of how ubiquitous rap has become. This epiphany came after watching four commercials in a row that had rap-infused themes.

Your Turn: Parking fee increase in pedestrian-friendly town ironic

As a student and a resident of First Street, I was particularly angry after reading Dianne Selden's article on Tuesday about Athens City Council's proposed ordinance to increase parking fees. She wrote that if the ordinance were to be passed, violations of 24-hour parking limits would increase to $30.

Your Turn: Crosswalks necessary, but students need to look both ways

Crosswalks might be a good idea for the locations described in the editorial, and the university should certainly do all it can to minimize dangers to anyone on campus. But please put the responsibility for self-preservation where it belongs: the university does not put students in peril who are listening to iPods and not looking both ways when entering a roadway. The Dragline Bros., not bound by looming graduations, has been a constant presence in Athens. The band's brand of messy, Rolling Stones-influenced rock has persisted through nearly a decade and shows no signs of stopping, although one of their members will be stepping away from the band after this weekend.

Editorial: A preventable cancer

A proposed bill in the Ohio House would make the human papillomavirus vaccine a requirement for girls aged 10 and 11. It would be a major step in helping to prevent HPV in all future generations, but Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland does not support the move.
