After a report released Friday detailed sanitation, dietary and personnel problems with Aramark, one of the state's private food prison vendors, some Ohio lawmakers are calling for the state to terminate the company's contract.
Ohio Representative Debbie Phillips called for Gov. John Kasich and Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to discontinue business with the company in a press release sent earlier today.
“This report is shocking and completely unacceptable, but it should not come as a surprise to anyone, given Aramark’s poor performance in DRC facilities in the past,” Phillips said in the release. “Understaffing in Ohio prisons creates unsafe conditions for workers, and Aramark has clearly underperformed here.”
The company, headquartered in Philadelphia, was fined $142,000 for its violations.
Phillips was not the only one to come out against Aramark. Since the report, Ohio Rep. Matt Lundy, a Democrat from Lorain, has also said the state should sever ties with Aramark, according to a release from Lundy's office.
