Thursday’s episode of Supernatural said goodbye to Mary (Samantha Smith). If you couldn’t watch the episode live, here’s what you missed:
Rowena confirms that Mary is “no longer on this Earth”
In last week's episode, Nick (Mark Pellegrino) tried to resurrect Lucifer by kidnapping Donatello (Keith Szarabajka). In the last few minutes, Jack accidentally killed Mary.
This week’s episode picks up with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) coming back to the bunker, where they become suspicious after not finding Jack (Alexander Calvert) and Mary. Sam asks Rowena (Ruth Connell) to do a tracking spell on Mary and Jack. Rowena complies, but can’t perform a tracking spell on Jack because his magic is too unstable. She says that she cannot get a reading on Mary, but she can confirm that Mary is “no longer on this Earth.”
Dean breaks a chair and the plan now is to bring Mary back.
Jack is getting dangerous
Mary’s death is detrimental to Jack’s emotional state. He initially flies to random places around the world to escape what he did. When he finally faces the music, he asks Rowena for a spell to bring her back because he feels responsible. Rowena gives him one and helps him with the ingredients back at the bunker, but will not let him perform the spell because of his emotional state. He teleports her back to her apartment and performs the spell himself. The spell does not work, but ends up bringing back a blank body of Mary that they use for a hunter’s funeral.
Throughout the episode, Jack is seeing Lucifer in his subconscious. Sam hallucinated Lucifer the same way in season seven. This could point toward a dichotomy of Jack’s relationship with Sam and Jack’s inherent relationship with his dad.
Also, throughout the season Jack has been getting increasingly more dangerous with his powers. Jack inadvertently stabbed one of the neighborhood kids and incinerated a snake.
The brothers process the death
Sam and Dean mourn Mary’s death in their own ways. Dean stares off into the fire while Sam comforts Cas (Misha Collins) and advises him to stay back and mind his distance from Dean.
Earlier in the episode, Dean says that he is dead to Cas if anything happens to Mary because Cas knew about Jack’s behavior and kept it under wraps.
There’s only two episode left in the season so they better make up.
