Ohio’s national and state public lands have recently been affected by cuts to budgets and staffing. In the Ohio legislature's 2026-27 budget bill, the basic operational budget for Ohio State Parks and Watercraft, which includes nearby locations such as Strouds Run State Park and Burr Oak State Park, was cut in half. The state budget bill was signed by Gov. Mike DeWine in July and brought the Parks and Watercraft budget from $55 million in the 2025 fiscal year to $27.7 million in the 2026 fiscal year.

A shocking 73.2% of students report moderate to high stress, and nearly 50% of U.S. college students report not being able to stop or control worrying more than half the time. College stressors are endless. From exams, work-study jobs, navigating independence, family conflicts and financial and social pressures, attempting to balance these obligations leave students feeling stretched beyond their limits.

In a Sept. 2 press conference, President Donald Trump stated he would be open to former military members who are teachers to carry guns in the classroom. As of Sept. 10, there have been 47 school shootings in the U.S. this year. These shootings have occurred in elementary schools all the way up to college campuses.

Ohio University’s campus is gorgeous. The trees, flowers and friendly students make a great atmosphere for young people from around the world to learn. However, there is a common misconception that such an environment creates a bubble that shields students from the outside world, a misconception that paints Athens as a liberally-minded wonderland filled with new ideas and investments. What people commonly reference in this idealistic belief is the city of Athens, not Athens County.

Every fall, college freshmen move into their new dorms and acclimate to life on campus. Some may try to connect with people in their dorms, memorize routes to classes or figure out the best spots to eat nearby. But for others, fall is for finding a forever family in Greek life.

From infancy, humans are tasked with growing and adapting to the world around them through a cycle of trial and error. Each time a child falls attempting to walk for the first time, they are learning and developing the motor skills they need to one day do it without thinking. The same applies to speaking, writing and even thinking itself, as well as almost every other task.

The school year consists of balancing coursework, friends and extracurriculars. People may even have time to squeeze in a job, but on top of college courses, this can be a major challenge. This is why taking advantage of summer to work can be so beneficial. Summer is a time of friends and rest, but it is also a four-month window to make money and gain more responsibility in a new environment.
