As social and political issues have garnered attention throughout the previous year, many brands and companies have leaned into incorporating activist themes into their marketing strategies, and the Super Bowl commercials were no exception. Although mixed in with funny and lighthearted commercials, several companies rightfully used the heavily sought-after screen time to raise awareness and send powerful messages, and it worked well for those who did it tastefully.

On Feb. 7 in Evendale, Ohio, north of Cincinnati, residents took matters into their own hands when neo-nazi protests appeared on I-75. The protestors were wearing all-black clothing and masks and holding swastika flags. Although the protest was incredibly hateful, it was not unlawful because it was on pedestrian walkways. The reaction from Cincinnatians was remarkable and showed how powerful a community can be when united against hate. Cincinnati set an example of what it means not to tolerate hate.

While the actual game stirred up emotions, Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance, hosted by Apple Music, sent shockwaves beyond the stadium. From the heavy political symbolism to famous cameos, his performance wasn’t only entertaining, it included a statement that more than likely left many politicians less than thrilled. Lamar didn’t just perform, he told a story.

Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 8, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill, Jan. 8. HB 8, also known as the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” into public schools across Ohio, requiring schools to disclose "sexual" content and students' sexual orientation to parents.
