This Saturday, Nov. 18, I will be turning 20 years old. That number evokes so many thoughts, positive and negative, and I feel many who are in college are thinking some of the same things. Entering this new decade of my life, I want to say, “Cheers!” to 19 and share my thoughts on my upcoming roaring 20s.

Art comes in many forms in Athens. With its popular local music, murals across Uptown and musical theater performances scattered about, Athens does not lack creativity. While all of those are the traditional things one may think of when it comes to art, there is only one form that encapsulates fashion, performance, music and a voice for many — drag.

Friday night had Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium booming with guitars and drums, combined with thrilled screams from the audience as The Driver Era took to the stage. The band’s hour-and-a-half-long set had Ohio University students jumping and shouting the lyrics to every song and chanting the names “Rocky,” “Riker” and “Ross.”

Sex education often gets dismissed as a topic of conversation. However, two organizations aim to change this narrative. At a workshop Tuesday night, Ohio University medical students had the opportunity to learn everything from reporting the sexual histories of patients to fun facts about the speed of ejaculation.

I would call myself a big Taylor Swift fan. I know almost every song in a second of it playing, I’ve seen her in concert, I stayed up for “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” and I enjoy following occasional updates about her via social media. I love being a Swiftie, I am proudly open about it. However, I think there is a certain breed of Swifties that can occasionally take things too far and unfortunately, those people are the representatives of the fanbase.

Phi Delta Epsilon’s Anatomy Fashion Show took place Sunday, proving beauty is not only on the outside but also on the inside– or insides. This unique take on a typical runway was to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, all while serving skeleton and modeling muscles.

Ohio University is without a doubt one of the best places for a party. With Halloween and Homecoming on the horizon, the social aspects of the school year are only just getting started. For many at OU, this is an exciting time full of opportunities for memories, fun and potentially bad decisions. However, this time of year is challenging for me and others like me who aren’t big partiers.

Sept. 18 is International Equal Pay Day, and worldwide, many are working to bring more recognition and appreciation to the topic. According to the United Nations, the day "represents the longstanding efforts toward the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value" and continues to push against discrimination in all forms, especially against women and girls.

Earth Day at Ohio University has become increasingly more important and is celebrated yearly. Even with the holiday falling on Palmer Fest, people still found a way to spread awareness for dear old Mother Earth. With climate change and sustainability becoming a more significant conversation topic each year, this was how students cared for trees of green and red roses, too.

As the unofficial, highly anticipated weed holiday of April 20, or 420, rolls around, many students at Ohio University have different opinions on the legalization of marijuana in Ohio. The use of recreational weed in Ohio is illegal and is considered a minor misdemeanor and can result in a fine; however, Athens decriminalized possession of weed, resulting in a zero dollar fine for minor misdemeanor offenses regarding marijuana.

The opportunity of a lifetime for Bobcats looking to share their research and findings arrived in the form of the annual Student Research and Creative Activity Expo. The event showcased students’ works in research and creative pieces and was given the chance to win awards and cash prizes in person. Judging took place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and the presentations were open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for anyone in Athens to view and enjoy.
