Individually, Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X are cultural giants. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t at least know their names. In their heydays, though, when Muhammad Ali was the heavyweight champion of the world and Malcolm X was a spokesman for the Nation of Islam-- they may have been two of the most famous (or infamous, dependent on who you asked) Black men in America.

The tortured artist is one of the longest standing tropes in popular culture. This character is someone who excels in his/her field but battles inner demons who are as consuming as the character’s art is brilliant. The tortured artist exemplifies the idea that great art comes from great suffering, or in simpler terms, no pain, no gain.

Today, the NBA stands as one of the world’s most respected and watched sports leagues in the world. Its stardom is so captivating that one of its most famous players, LeBron James, can star in a critically panned Space Jam 2 and still compete with a Marvel movie on its opening weekend.

It’s no secret that Walt Disney Pictures animation has a history of racist stereotypes, caricatures and ideas in its films. Last year, after the launch of its premier streaming service Disney+, the studio put “cultural warnings” on films that are blatantly racist, at the time of release and now.

Finally, it’s that time of year again. The turkey is done in the oven. Dressing, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, deviled eggs, candied yams and a seemingly endless array of other side dishes line the table. Our families are all gathered around the table, preparing to say grace and to devour the meal in front of them right before slipping into a food coma for the rest of the night.

Protesting is a sacred American tradition. The American Revolution, the genesis of our country, was really one large-scale protest against the British. Throughout the rest of US history, protests would continue to be a powerful tool from the Abolitionists to the Civil Rights movement, women’s suffrage and countless other issues.

Lovecraft Country’s finale focuses on one thing: death. It watches over the death of three major characters and is ultimately the death of the first season. Yet, it still sets the series up for a new life if there’s a season two.

On Nov. 13, 2016, Dave Chappelle hosted the first Saturday Night Live after the 2016 election. The most stinging part of that episode was not the sketches or even the long-awaited return of Chappelle himself, but for me, it was a line he said in his opening monologue.

In recent years, Candace Owens has become a shining black star in conservative punditry. She’s accrued over 2.6 million followers on Twitter, just recently published a book and is the founder of Blexit, an organization aimed at persuading Black voters to leave the democratic party. While Candace Owens may be a favorite amongst white conservatives -- don’t be fooled -- she’s no black conservative because her rhetoric is inherently anti-Black.

Every week, Lovecraft Country has delighted its fans by daring to venture into new sci-fi and horror elements with subsequent episodes often more bizarre than the last. These tropes — ghosts, sloggoths, time-travel etc. — are filled with fictional horrors, but truly, the series’ largest horrors have never come from the fantastical.

“Jig-A-Bobo” starts with tragedy: the death of Emmett Till, one of the most horrific murders in history where a young 13-year old black boy was murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman in the south. A “crime” that she’d later admit he never did. While this was an especially impactful death on the country’s conscience, it’s personal for Diana (Jada Harris).

In times of celebration or sorrow, whether today or tomorrow, there’s always a perfect jazz song to match the mood. Even though the heyday of the genre, once ignorantly called “musical noise” by Walter Cronkite, is decades past, the innovative theories of its musicians are still heavily influential in today’s music.

If you’ve been watching Lovecraft Country since its premiere, you know that above all else -- this show is ambitious. From week to week, concepts may not be executed perfectly, but there will undoubtedly be an attempt to shock you, whether that be through the genre shifts each week or by giving more backstory, development and attention to its cast of characters.

When it’s all said and done, Kanye West will be remembered as one of the greatest artists, entrepreneurs and creatives of all time, but right now, his image is stained with controversies. Controversy is nothing new for West who famously declared that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” and later interrupted Taylor Swift at the Video Music Awards, but never before have Kanye’s quests been journeyed at such scale.
