When looking over music released in the past century, there are certain moments in modern history that had such a big impact on the world that individual artists and bands felt compelled to use their musical gifts to comment on it. From protesting the war to slandering presidents, music has been influenced by politics for a long time.

All genres of music can be connected to one another as far as history and influences go, but some have a stronger influence than others. There are certain genres and bands that have direct, yet niche impacts on how musical evolutions make way for new artists to take those changes in stride. Grunge music and the music of the modern day emo-phase are a prime example.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, Ohio University students and Athens residents alike know that the HallOUween block party is– or, rather, was– a staple of Athens culture. It hasn’t taken place since 2019 due to the pandemic. The city of Athens tacking a second year onto the block party’s coronavirus-induced hiatus is hypocritical, considering that other mass-crowd events were and are still allowed to occur.

As the world has gotten a slice of pre-coronavirus normalcy this summer, it has gotten new music and even a few concerts. New summer jams like Lorde’s “Solar Power”, Doja Cat’s “Ain’t Shit” and Lizzo’s “Rumors” featuring Cardi B have joined releases from earlier this year that stayed in people’s regular rotations like “Peaches” by Justin Bieber, “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” by Lil Nas X and “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat featuring SZA.

As the semester comes to a close, the question of how to go about my last article of the semester lingers. Ultimately, since my family has provided 10 articles worth of reviews, I decided I wanted to give them a break a bit early and flip the typical “Tunes with Tate” roles. So, I asked them what one of their favorite albums are to review.

In June 2019, Taylor Swift’s master recording rights to her first six albums were sold without her knowledge when Scooter Braun fully took over the Big Machine Label Group via his media holding company Ithaca Holdings LLC. Seven months prior, Swift declined to sign a new recording contract with Big Machine and, instead, left to sign a direct label agreement with Universal Music Group. With UMG, Swift would be able to own all of her masters, something she was denied with Big Machine despite asking to purchase them on multiple occasions.

The album was leaked, which ultimately led to it being put out a week earlier than anticipated. This decision did not come lightly, however, and during an Instagram live, Lipa talked about feeling uncertain about the release because of the nature of the global pandemic.

The avant-rock band The Garden was created in 2011, consisting of twin brothers Fletcher and Wyatt Shears from Orange County, California. They were only 17 years old when they decided to start making music, and their band name comes from their desire to keep their music evolving and growing. Their first album was released in 2013, titled The Life and Times of a Paperclip and have since released three others: Haha in 2015, Mirror Might Steal Your Charm in 2018 and, most recently, Kiss My Super Bowl Ring in 2020. When you hear the name Charli XCX, the first thing that comes to mind is likely her feature on Iggy Azalea’s hit 2014 single, “Fancy” or “Boom Clap” from The Fault in Our Stars soundtrack. But, there’s more to the English singer-songwriter worth noting.

While brainstorming ways to evolve Tunes with Tate and spice up the weekly content, I was surprised that I had yet to do anything TikTok-related, so I whipped up a playlist of the first handful of TikTok songs I could think of as well as some that were requested through Instagram polls (check them out every Thursday on our page, @thepostathens).
