Your Turn: Garry Hunter takes advantage of legal system

Recently, I received an e-mail from Garry Hunter, Republican candidate for law director. Actually, he sent out a mass message to all OU students. I do not appreciate spam in the first place, but for the law director to do this, I am shocked. This is clearly against Ohio University and local voting regulations. Should not the top legal advisor for this county be informed enough to follow those very laws?

Your Turn: A premier attorney should take care of Athens

Athens City Law Director Garry Hunter has been recognized by his peers as one of Ohio's premier city attorneys and is the only two-time elected president of the Ohio Municipal Attorneys Association. What better endorsement could an individual have for a job than to be regarded by his peers as one of the best? We are lucky to have Mr. Hunter here in Athens, and I hope you will join me and support Garry Hunter as Athens City Law Director.

The Voice of Reason: Homosexuality shouldn't be a taboo topic in today's society

Recently, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling outed her beloved character Albus Dumbledore as a homosexual. The move was met with controversy in a culture that, despite its modernity, remains uncomfortable with alternative lifestyles. Rowling is allowed whatever artistic and political freedoms she desires, but her revelation does offer us an opportunity to reassess traditional values and question the place of homosexuality in a free society.

Maybe It's Just Me: Living life to the fullest is not the same as living life recklessly

Seven college students were killed in a beach house fire in North Carolina, and it sends a sobering message to all of us: No matter who we are, our socioeconomic status, our class, our age, our race, our gender or our physical abilities, we can die any time. It seems morbid and almost harsh to put that truth into words, but not saying it doesn't make it any less of a reality.

Your Turn: Law director needs commitment to public service

I believe a public official should have a commitment to community service. Garry Hunter has demonstrated his commitment to community service by being a member of The Plains United Methodist Church for 42 years, a 25-year member of the Salvation Army Board, a former member of both the Kiwanis and the Athens Foundation, a volunteer, legal counsel for the Athens High School McClure Education Foundation, a volunteer, legal counsel for the Nelsonville High School Restoration Foundation and member of the community Improvement Corporation. I support Garry Hunter for re-election as Athens City Law Director.
