OU's hairy situation

In response to a need identified by its President, Ohio University is pushing for the employment of a barber to cut black people's hair after a shop's business hours in order to serve one segment of our population. If this is justified as being based on the recognition of diversity within our community, why not likewise address the special hair-cutting need of another group?

Poll: some Americans believe in 9/11 conspiracy theory

With the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks quickly approaching, skepticism about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy is strong, as one in three Americans believe officials in the federal government either assisted or took no action to stop the attacks, according to a recent survey. About 36 percent of the 1,010 respondents in a national Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll said that they thought U.S. government officials were involved in the Sept. 11 atrocities because they wanted the U.S. to go to war in the Middle East. They had proof saying that bin Laden was going to attack the U.S. and that he was going to use airplanes

A toast to The Post

I'm writing in response to Carleigh A. Kosonovich's letter (Aug. 3, More than meets the eye). I did not see a hard copy of The Summer Post (July 20) she is referring to, but I don't understand why it angered her so much. No, the Indiana Jones of Beer was not the most important piece of news to report that week, but for a newspaper covering Ohio University and Athens, I'm sure it was the most interesting.

Column: Students held hostage by Internet

With the random chaos of moving out of the dorms and into residential houses or apartments for the summer, it seems that after two weeks now, things are starting to get back to normal around here. Most of the debris from students moving out has been either looted or collected, classes are back in full swing and Court Street is looking less and less like a ghost town with each passing day.

Dwelling on Drinking

I never cease to be baffled by the grim seriousness with which President McDavis and administrators are taking Ohio University's party school ranking in the Princeton Review. If they are worried about the party school image's effect on the university's academic integrity, then perhaps they should aim directly at academic improvement. Taking the roundabout puritanical route will only provoke more students to voluntarily complete Princeton Review's online survey.Nobody seems to doubt the academic integrity of OU's company on the list, such as the University of Wisconsin and Indiana University. Why should the lighthearted party school label be so damaging to OU?Those who take the party school business seriously should recline on the therapist's couch to discover what fears and insecurities are at the root of this misplaced fanaticism.'
