Religion in disguise

Revisiting an intellectual battle that has raged intermittently for the last 80 years, a Pennsylvania trial begins this week to decide the constitutionality of teaching intelligent design in public schools. Although the issue seems rather simple from an objective standpoint, it has been complicated by church officials and religious-minded politicians bent on blurring the line separating church and state. The concept of intelligent design - ultimately religion under the guise of science - still has no place within the halls of public schools.

Volleyball set to defend home win streak

The Ohio women's volleyball team is set to open Mid-American Conference play this weekend and begin defending its back-to-back MAC championships with two home matches. The Bobcats, who ended non-conference play with a record of 10-2, have earned an even larger target on their backs since last season after their recent accomplishments. Along with only losing one MAC game in two years, the Bobcats took over the nation's longest home-game winning streak, and it could grow to 31 with wins against Akron tonight and Buffalo on Saturday.

Field hockey downed No. 12 Hoosiers

The Ohio field hockey team dropped its fourth game in a row Saturday in a contest that was closer than the 4-1 final score indicates. The Indiana Hoosiers, ranked 12th in the nation, proved to be too much for the visiting Bobcats, as IU converted three of their four goals off penalty corners.

When defensive lineman Jameson Hartke moved to Ohio University from his hometown of Centerville, he packed more than just his suitcases. The Post's Courtney Miller talked with this true freshman about his status as an unlikely hero, his time on campus and his thoughts on what lies ahead.

The Big One not so big after all

So The Big One turned out to be a Big Flop. Figuratively speaking, no one showed up at the Athens County Fairgrounds on Saturday to watch the 70 musical acts, laugh at nationally touring comedians, enjoy carnival attractions, view student films, eat fair food and enjoy the great outdoors for the last weekend of summer.

Unruly parties weigh on police

Fire-setting and other dangerous behaviors by Ohio University students like those last weekend will only dissipate when students frown upon drunken deviance and police themselves, OU President Roderick McDavis said at Christ the King University Parish Center, near the scene of last weekend's revelry.
