Through three meets, Ohio has won 33 events out of a possible 48.
Corrin Van Lanen, Emily Zimcosky, Sam Glass and Hannah Schlegel have combined for 20 of those 33 event wins for Ohio. Each has also been on a couple of the five relays victories up to this point of the season.
The ability of Van Lanen and Zimcosky to consistently win was put on display last year, so it was reasonable for them to do so again this year. Glass and Schlegel have come in as freshmen and impressed coach Rachel Komisarz-Baugh.
Through three meets this year, Ohio has not had any of its divers finish in first place. Last year, Ohio only won three diving events, all by Olivia Dillon. She has not competed in a meet up to this point of this season.
As a group, the divers have racked up four second-place finishes and have had at least two divers in the top four of all but one event so far this season.
Earning first place is not all that matters, as points are awarded for the second through fifth places as well. Those points can be the difference is winning a dual meet or an invitational where the teams are extremely close in terms of points.
The meet against Buffalo was a perfect example, as Ohio won eight of the 14 swimming events but still lost the meet 161-139. Buffalo won both diving events, but it wasn’t just those wins that made the difference, it was having someone finish in the top two in almost all the events.
"Every single point counts and yeah, the first place is great but ... it's an individual event but it's a team sport and we can't rely on one person, we need to rely on the whole team," Komisarz-Baugh said.
Dual meets are done for Ohio until 2018, but the Bobcats still have an invitational left where points will be more spread out between the teams. So, each point could mean a change in where Ohio finishes in the team standings.
