At the beginning of May, through Ohio University, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Tokyo, Japan, for 16 days as part of the Office of Global Opportunities’ Animation and Culture in Japan program. I experienced an unforgettable trip to the biggest city in the world, and I wanted to share my admiration for Japanese culture and way of life. Simply put: Japan does some things better.

Ohio House Bill 96 is currently in committee in the Ohio Senate. The primary sponsor of the bill is Rep. Brian Stewart (R-Asheville). If passed, the bill would eliminate the sales tax exemptions currently in place for newspapers and newspaper subscriptions.

In discussing the topic of environmental conservation and restoration, a romanticized idea of returning land to an untouched, pre-human wilderness is often brought up. Even in practice, many holding positions of land management act in this way with the Wilderness Act of 1964 defining a wild area as “an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”

This is why taking advantage of summer to work can be so beneficial. Summer is a time of friends and rest, but it is also a four-month window to make money and gain more responsibility in a new environment.

The new age of college football has added lots of new ways to build a team, none more well-known or used than the transfer portal. Ohio utilized the transfer portal very well last season, picking up big players that helped the team win the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championship. Ohio (37-19 overall, 18-8 Mid-American Conference) had a very strong season, showing it can contend at the top of the MAC. It finished as the best overall pitching team with the production of redshirt junior Skipp Miller, freshman Anna Wise and sophomore Mikie Lieving. The team also finished top 7 in the conference in both batting and fielding.

A recent round of Ohio Environmental Protection Agency grants funded 116 water systems in 58 counties across the state, including Athens. The grant consists of $2.7 million and is aimed toward improving public water systems and drinking water.
