Spring has begun and there hasn’t been a better time to find a good book to read. Spring and literature have been interconnected throughout literary history. Look to the sonnets of William Shakespeare, particularly “Sonnet 98” which evokes an image of Spring, love and nature. OU carries on this tradition of Spring and Literature with the Spring Literary Festival.

This year, the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away turns 20. Though the film is a breathtaking marvel in animation and a mesmerizing folk tale, it is also an incredible showcase of stylized Japanese cuisine, to a point the main plot of the film is driven by what the characters eat and don’t eat.

“Dune” as a franchise has entered public consciousness with several forays including a David Lynch film, the 2021 film adaptation and ranking 35 out of 100 in the Great American Reads of 2018. This popularity can be tied to the fervent fan base of “Dune,” spanning generations and global communities. Given that, why should a person read “Dune?”

Cinema has drawn inspiration from other media (both directly and indirectly) into the filmmaking process. Intellectual Properties are pushed through the Hollywood machine, in the forms of adaptations, sequels or direct homages to past films. Examples in 2020 alone being “Mulan,” “Dune,” “The Witches” and “No Time to Die.” In the milieu of this culture of cinema “Dredd” stands above the rest as a perfect adaptation of the 2000 AD Comic.

Ghost in the Shell is a 1995 cyberpunk Japanese Anime film that takes place in a futuristic Japan, where Major Kusanagi and her partner attempt to track down a rogue hacker known as the “Puppet Master.” The film is equal parts police procedural, international crime thriller and noir. We follow the detectives through the case as they attempt to find out who the Puppet Master is, and who they are as human beings.

When someone says “crime” in pop culture, the mind drifts to images of “Breaking Bad,” “Sopranos” or “The Godfather.” Though there are a few marginal exceptions to this rule, crime has been associated with the organized and illicit trade of drugs. The stories are about the titular “Wise Guy” and heads of the Crime Underworld.

When it comes to horror, children are usually excluded in part due to the violence, terror or overt adult themes in the films. In general, horror is relegated to the brave and the daring who choose to sit through a few frights to enjoy a film. When you become a teen, it is near second nature. For adults, it’s a mixed bag of horror fanatics, the casual fan and those who abstain. Our relation to horror can be traced back to certain moments of people's lives. From scary moments to movies, everyone begins somewhere with horror, and “Coraline” is the perfect place to start.

“The Immortal Hulk” has changed the face of one of the most iconic heroes in American comics. Taking it back to its horror roots, the Hulk becomes more monster than man in their Marvel series, as the Hulk comes out at night through gruesome body transformations. Writer Al Ewing has scaled Hulk back to his inception–the gray, night-faring monster of the early day Marvel–to inject a little horror into the superhero genre.
