Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx going mano e mano would seem, at least from an acting standpoint, the equivalent of English Premier League soccer power Manchester United taking on its cross-town rivals, Manchester City. In other words, a total and tragic mismatch. After all, Cruise is perhaps America's most popular actor and is backed up by widespread critical acclaim. Foxx, on the other hand, has a somewhat undistinguished career, mostly in comedy. However, with Cruise at his typical best and Foxx doing yeoman's work in keeping up, the two drive director Michael Mann's latest film, Collateral

Two things have remained constant this summer in Athens: a never-ending flow of stories about both city and university construction, renovation and demolition projects and the ability of new Ohio University President Roderick McDavis to at least give the appearance that he is thoughtfully looking into the actions of the past regime as opposed to simply rubber-stamping previous decisions. A case confirming both points involves the Mill Street Apartments. These apartments were given a death sentence in 2000 (with four of 12 buildings being torn down four years ago), and finally, four years later, the wrecking ball was supposed to condemn the remaining buildings to a swift demise at the close of the 2003-04 school year. However, McDavis gave the apartments a reprieve about two weeks ago, wishing to actually tour them before having them destroyed.
DETROIT - For one day, at least, Charlie Frye was the belle of the ball. That is, of course, if a 6-foot-4-inch, 230-pound Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback can be the belle of any ball.

Jonathan Demme's re-make of The Manchurian Candidate (1962) faces an almost impossible challenge: measuring up to one of the greatest films of all time. While not quite as good as its groundbreaking predecessor, the new film, starring Hollywood luminaries Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep, is still an excellent film and a bright beacon of light in the otherwise dreary and dark fog that is the summer movie season.
HUDSON - For more than 10 years, Deli on Rye has operated in a rather modest storefront in a rather modest shopping plaza, keeping with its town's rather modest low profile by closing every night before 9 p.m.
DETROIT - Do not let Ohio quarterback Ryan Hawk's composure deceive you. Sitting at a podium at Mid-American Conference Media Day, Hawk appeared calm and collected. Inside, however, he is antsy for the next month to pass for the season opener against Virginia Military Institute to arrive.
