Jules Paymer (they/them) is an LGBTQ+ alternative rock and pop singer/songwriter with an eventful few years behind them and an exciting future ahead of them. Their music ranges from slow and sad to vengeful and exciting, and while no two songs sound the same, the themes of sapphic love are extremely prevalent, as well as the idea of looking back on childhood with the wisdom of an adult.

Heading into their freshman year at Ohio University, the singer and songwriter will be studying music production and recording industry on a pre-entertainment law track this fall, wanting to further their musical craft and knowledge of the music industry.

A day after singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran wins his copyright case, he releases his sixth studio album “Subtract” or “-”. With this title, he now has albums named after the five, most basic math symbols. After years of dabbling in upbeat pop songs, Sheeran takes a step back to produce a well-rounded lyrical acoustic album, subtracting the style of music that did exceedingly well on the charts.

When Olivia Rodrigo burst onto the scene with the fastest growing song in Spotify history, I, like most males my age, judged a book by its cover and wrote her off. I thought “Driver’s License” was another radio-friendly, sappy song with no real meaning. Then Rodrigo posted a TikTok wearing a shirt with my idol Kurt Cobain’s face on it, and I fell in love.

When people hear about alternative band boygenius, usually they gravitate toward Phoebe Bridgers, a breakout indie singer who achieved mass critical acclaim for her second album “Punisher,” which dropped in 2020. The novel “Daisy Jones and The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid was published in 2019. This year, a television series was released, following the same story as the book and with an entire album accompanying it. Having visuals and true music connected to these characters has brought a whole other level of depth to the story.

Most lovers of music and pop culture have heard of at least one of the three members of boygenius, whether it be Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker or Lucy Dacus. The supergroup released an EP in 2018, and all of the individual artists have also released their own content since then, including Bridgers’ Grammy-nominated album, 'Punisher'. On Friday, the band released 'the record', a sophomore album that could not have been less of a slump. The album is a beautiful depiction of sorrow and growth that spotlights the best of each artist.

Last month, Ohio University announced that mxmtoon would serve as their annual music industry summit’s keynote speaker and featured artist in April, following in the footsteps of past artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Michelle Zauner from Japanese Breakfast who were previously in attendance at the two-day event.
