Letter: Ohio men's basketball coach Saul Phillips missed an opportunity to show Bobcats pride at NCAA Final Four

During this past weekend’s Men’s Final Four Championship in Indianapolis, Ohio University Men’s Basketball head coach Saul Phillips joined many of his coaching peers as Duke University captured the crown. This was the first Final Four Championship that Phillips attended in his capacity as Ohio’s head coach. It would have been a perfect opportunity for him to represent, steward and evangelize for Ohio University. Instead, Phillips was clad in Badger red and white to support his former employer, the University of Wisconsin-Madison.While his allegiance to his former employer and colleagues is admirable, Phillips missed an opportunity to show his Bobcat pride. Phillips’ actions send a confusing message to future recruits while alienating current players and fans. Where was the loyalty to his current employer? Did he not want to showcase his allegiance to the Bobcats at the nation’s largest college basketball event? How are students supposed to take Phillips seriously the next time he visits dining halls to solicit attendance at home basketball games? On a campus that often sees more students wearing Buckeye attire than Bobcat gear, Phillips needs to lead by example and remember that he is one of Ohio’s most visible brand ambassadors. I can think of about 550,000 reasons (per year) why this is important. Matthew J. Freedman is a 1997 Ohio University alumnus and resident of New Albany, Ohio.
