The past week has been extremely stimulating in the activism area here at Ohio University. Starting with the excitement of the F--kRapeCulture rally Oct. 11 and continuing through the horrendous scene on Court Street over Homecoming weekend, I’ve never seen our campus so aflame with engagement and debate, especially over such an important issue.
As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I write to respond to Matt Farmer’s mistaken assertion that our Board is out of touch with students. Here are examples of my own interactions with students in just the last two weeks:
Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn will meet with Athens Police officials Monday to decide whether the state of Ohio will press charges following the investigation of the alleged Court Street rape that was filmed and posted to Instagram.
Entering its contest against Eastern Michigan, Ohio players stressed that they needed to play four quarters of complete football — a concept they were devoid of against Central Michigan on Oct. 12.
Ohio University’s Student Alumni Board collected more cans than ever before during this year’s Homecoming Weekend. The Student Alumni Board placed collection boxes in residence halls and uptown businesses for the annual canned food drive. All 2,982 cans were donated to the Athens Food Pantry.
Like students at countless colleges spanning the nation, odds are that you have been bombarded by a growing epidemic that for many goes either undetected or blatantly ignored. The toxic epidemic that I speak of is, of course, the electronic cigarette. The government has not brought down harsh regulations on this industry as it has with tobacco.

The Homecoming Weekend rape is a low point in our university community. First and foremost, I wish to state that I stand with the survivor, and I hope that you receive justice and find healing.
