A disservice

As the Senate continues confirmation hearings of John Bolton, President Bush's nominee for United Nations ambassador, the proceedings have taken a surprising turn. During the hearings Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, criticized Bolton for being a bully and described him as the poster child of what someone in the diplomatic corps should not be. However, despite his objection to Bolton, Voinovich decided not to block his nomination in the confirmation hearings and allowed the full Senate to vote on the matter.

Just the thing

The tenure of Ohio University's director of athletics Thomas Boeh ended Friday when he resigned from OU and accepted a similar position at Fresno State University. Although it might seem that the university is facing a great loss -just when Ohio sports are seemingly coming around -Boeh's decision to leave is actually the best-case scenario for him, Ohio sports and the university as a whole. Despite a few highlights under Boeh's watch -namely the recent success of the men's basketball team and the hiring of Frank Solich as the new football coach -his 10-year administration was mediocre at best, and the university is now poised to find a candidate who can really build upon the recent successes of Ohio sports.

Krendl failed to engage grad students

Provost Kathy Krendl's May 9 Dialogue on the Future with Ohio University graduate students was an exercise in futility. Though dialogue implies a sharing of ideas, Provost Krendl was seemingly none too interested in actually hearing from graduate students. Instead of asking for our input, graduate students were treated to an hour-long PowerPoint presentation replete with vague generalities that had nothing to do with the reality of graduate student life. For instance, Krendl regaled us with information concerning the University's strategic plan. Though OU's mission statement sounds mighty impressive, I can go to the Web site and read it for myself. Instead I wanted to know how Krendl can claim the university values graduate student education when graduate classes and stipends are being cut. While there was a question and answer period, Krendl avoided the meaty issues facing graduate student education.

Instrument technician to teach new class next year

Some say Ohio University's best-kept secret lies in Room 321 of Robert Glidden Hall. The room is riddled with used instruments from flutes to trumpets to tubas, each handled by a man whose job has become a somewhat precious commodity in Ohio.

Outlook for success: Miserable failure in eye of the beholder

They say there are two kinds of people in this world: pessimists and optimists. Those who think the glass is half empty and those who think it's half full. Those who think George W. Bush is half stupid and those who think he's half smart. As for myself, I have struggled with pessimism for most of my life. Sometimes, I think I'll never overcome it. The appeal of pessimism is that it protects me from failure. If I think I'm going to fail and then I do, I can't be disappointed.

Kent State shootings worth remembering

The Kent State shootings, thirty-five years ago last week, are somewhat close to home for me. I started college at Ohio University the late summer and fall of 1970, following the spring of the Kent State incident.
